Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail Opened Additional Section On Tuesday

For years work has been underway on the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail along the Nelson / Amherst County line in Piney River. Some of the trail has been open in Nelson, but other parts weren’t reachable because a section in Amherst was not ready. “Part of the Amherst section has been closed, it has kept people from going on the last 2 miles in Nelson. By opening the Amherst part we are opening a good stretch in Nelson,” said Popie Martin with the VA Blue Ridge Railway Trail Foundation.

Lucas Barber, a local scout from Amherst, is recognized. He helped build the mile markers on the trail. This helps rescue crews locate people in need faster.

According to the Railway Trail website:

“After almost six years of dreaming, planning, physical labor and fund-raising, the efforts of foundation members came to fruition on National Trails Day, June 7, 2003 when Phase I of the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway Trail was officially opened to the public. Phase I consisted of two trail heads, approximately 1.8 miles of trail surface and improvements, and the renovation of a 200-foot railway bridge.”

The Amherst opening helped complete the remaining parts.

According to a statement from Virginia State Police, a Nelson County woman died Monday afternoon following a two-car crash at the intersection of Route 29 and Route 56.

The crash happened around 3:40 p.m. Authorities say a 2000 Toyota Camry was making a left turn from Rt. 56 onto Rt. 29 when it cut off a 2007 Ford Focus. The Focus was traveling south on Route 29 and was unable to avoid the Camry, crashing into the driver’s side of the car.

The driver of the Camry, 83-year-old Joan W. DeMasters, of Roseland, died at the scene. She was wearing a seat belt. Her husband and passenger was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Focus, 33-year-old Antwan S. Rose, of Madison Heights, was not injured in the crash. He also was wearing a seat belt.

Police say no charges will be filed in the crash.

One person lost their live Monday afternoon after a major three car crash at the intersection of Tye Brook Highway (Route 56W) and US 29 in Colleen. “Sadly, there is one fatality from the crash,” Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks confirmed Monday afternoon.

The Virginia State Police investigated the accident.

The deceased person’s name is being withheld until all family has been notified.

Back in late February we told you about court proceedings involving this case. Monday, Commonwealth Attorney Anthony Martin released the sentencing information involved in these cases.

Today in Nelson County Circuit Court, two men received prison sentences for their roles in burglarizing several homes in the Faber area last year. Judge J. Michael Gamble heard emotional testimony from Serrena Becerra, Carol Beasley and James Wright who were the victims of these crimes and neighbors of Brodas Morris. Several of the witnesses lost family heirlooms, class rings and other property that they said could not be replaced. They also said they lost their feelings of being safe in their own homes.
Back in February, the two men pleaded guilty to burglaries and grand larcenies involving 3 different homes all within walking distance from Brodas Morris’ home. Both admitted to stealing a television, entertainment equipment, jewelry, scrap metal, copper wiring and plumbing, and a 12-gauge shotgun.
Brodus Morris (dob: May 1987) of Faber was sentenced to a total of 35 years in prison with 32 years suspended on certain conditions such as paying restitution to the property owners. He was also ordered to have no contact with the victims and will be on probation for 20 years after his release from prison.
Robert Thomas (dob: March 1989) was sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison with 27 years suspended. He will also be on probation and is also ordered to pay restitution to the victims.

Roseland Rescue Holds Annual Bluegrass Festival

For years and years Roseland Rescue has been providing volunteer fire and rescue service for the south end of Nelson as well as backing up other parts of the county. This past Saturday they held their annual bluegrass festival to help raise money for the squad.

In addition to tons of music, there was plenty of great food on hand.

Little Mountain Boys
Lynch Mountain Ramblers
Country Proud Bluegrass

Everyone from every generation had a great time at the festival.
All proceeds benefitted the Roseland Rescue Squad.

For years we’ve been telling you about a unique opportunity that rolls around each spring. Star Watch is held around this time for folks to gaze out into the heavens. It all takes place in a wide open field just behind Spruce Creek Gallery south of Nellysford.

One of the may types of telescopes used during Star Watch that will be held on April 14th 2012

Here’s all of the information you’ll need to know:

The Rockfish Valley Foundation and the Charlottesville Astronomical Society (CAS) will host an evening of astronomical observing for the public on Saturday, April 14th, beginning at 8 PM.  The observing site will be the field behind Spruce Creek Gallery and Park on Glenthorne Loop in Nellysford. Visitors may bring their own telescopes or look through those brought by CAS. In case of rain or extremely cloudy weather, the event will be postponed until the following evening at the same location.

Directions:
Drive south 1.4 miles from the Valley Green Shopping Center on Rt. 151 in Nellysford to Spruce Creek Gallery and turn left onto Glenthorne Loop (Rt. 627), immediately past the gallery. Drive down Glenthorne Loop for about 2 tenths of a mile and turn left to enter the field, where you will find parking and the observing site.

Among the objects of interest for observing will be Saturn (which will be at opposition, the best time to see it), Jupiter, Venus, Mars, open star clusters such as the Beehive and Double Cluster, and globular star clusters.

Traffic stop reveals fugitive

On March 30, 2012, Deputy Rick Smutz was patrolling the Tye River school zone and observed a silver Volvo speeding. A traffic stop was made. The driver told Deputy Smutz they were going to Lynchburg and then gave several false identities. After further investigation, it was discovered the driver was wanted in Connecticut for 1 hotel robbery and 7 bank robberies.

Driver: 46 year old – Kevin W. Bolden – New Haven, CT has the following outstanding charges in Connecticut:

Stolen vehicle – 1998 Volvo station wagon – silver in color
Outstanding warrants in Stamford, CT for armed robbery (bank)
Outstanding warrants in Woodbridge, CT for armed robbery (bank)
Outstanding warrants in Greenwich, CT for armed robbery (bank)
Suspected in hotel robbery in Connecticut

Sunday Big Hat Brunch At Veritas Benefits Nelson Relay For Life

People got to show off hats reminiscent of the Kentucky Derby at the Big Hat Brunch held at Veritas Vineyard and Winery in Afton. The day began with a sparkling wine reception followed by a four-course, wine-paired brunch in Saddleback Hall.

Proceeds from the $65 per person gala went directly to to Relay for Life of Nelson County.

It was a terribly soggy Saturday, but that didn’t stop people from participating in the Bel Monte Endurance Races at Wintergreen. A bike race as well as runs were held. It started at Royal Oaks Cabins just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and made its way through the countryside of the Nelson Mountains near Wintergreen Resort.
