A grueling 6-mile climb on a course with gradients reaching 14 percent. That’s how the James Beazell Wintergreen Ascent is described. The annual event is put on by Wintergreen Resort and the Charlottesville Racing Club. Cyclists made the ride to the top this past Sunday.
Results for the race should eventually be available here when posted.

Just as we told you about Nellys May being replaced with a bear over the weekend, we were sent this picture Monday morning in retaliation to that.

We first told you about the plight of missing Nelly Mae from the Nelson Farmers Market Coop in a story here and here.
Apparently the Bear Brigade is serious. Last night a bear turned up in place of missing Nelly Mae!
Now we have noticed Save Nelly May t-shirts around in some of the area stores.

It’s Nelson County’s only intersection with a traffic light and it didn’t even have that one until a few years back. It’s been the spot of numerous auto accidents over the years.
Friday afternoon another accident happened there, this time blocking Callohill Drive just west of the traffic light. The vehicle seen above flipped on it’s side near the intersection. Our Facebook friend Lisa Saunders snapped the picture above shortly after the accident.
According to witnesses on the scene, luckily it appeared no one was severely injured.

Most everyone is gearing up for the Nelson Relay For Life in May, but North Branch School held a pre Mini Relay For Life within the past week.
Groups of students, staff, and parents walked throughout the school day in support of the Nelson Relay for Life. A brief opening ceremony at 9:00 AM began the day with remarks by Amy Kirchner, Community Manager of the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society.
At the closing ceremony, North Branch Head Teacher, Charlotte Zinsser Booth, presented Nelson Relay for Life Chair, Amber Drumheller, with over $700 collected for the American Cancer Society.

We first told you about some of the renovation taking place at RVCC in this post a back in March. The old style original windows in the auditorium/gymnasium of the Rockfish Valley Community Center had been hidden away behind a false ceiling that was put in several years back. Volunteers recently started peeling away that drop ceiling to bring the decades old school back to its original state.
The work continues!

People got a chance to travel back to the 1940’s, the time of Bogart and Bergman, this past Saturday night. It was all part of a spring fundraiser for Wintergreen Performing Arts that’s gearing up for the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival.

A beautiful Saturday for most of the Blue Ridge Oyster Festival held on the grounds at Devils Backbone Brewing this past weekend. Though it was all about the oysters, there was music, wine, and, of course, beer! The event partially benefitted The Chesapeake Bay Foundation and Big Brothers & Big Sisters of The Central Blue Ridge.

As Tommy’s Weather mentioned Sunday in the forecast, snow might make an appearance in Nelson County overnight Sunday into Monday morning. It did! And as of this post it’s still coming down up there. NCL Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura sent us the first shot around 9AM, then NCL Writer/Photographer Marcie Gates followed up with more pictures from the Devils Knob area over at Wintergreen Real Estate’s Discovery Ridge.
As of this post around 11:30 AM Monday, no travel problems had been reported.
Tommy says light to moderate snow will continue to fall in the mountains of Nelson throughout the afternoon. Additional accumulations of 1-3 inches are possible in elevations above 2500 feet.
