A late Friday afternoon announcement as most people are heading out of town for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, confirms that Wintergreen Resort has been sold. NCL began hearing rumors of the sale during the mid afternoon hours Friday and has sourced information that Wintergreen Resort wil be acquired by the James C. Justice, II family, owners of Greenbrier Resort.
The sale will close by the end of June 2012.
In an announcement released to current Wintergreen Equity Members around 4PM Friday, James Justice said the following:
“We are excited about this acquisition for two reasons, one being the obvious tie in with our other properties, The Greenbrier Resort® and The Resort at Glade Springs®, the other being what this means for the property owners and members of Wintergreen along with the general public. We intend to take this property to the next level and see tremendous opportunities as we work with the Wintergreen management and staff in developing new membership programs and vacation packages. The Wintergreen facilities are spectacular and the entire Resort has a tremendous impact on the local and regional tourism industry.”

The huge wooden carved bear is back at its permanent home on Devils Knob after being moved to the Nelson Farmers Market some weeks ago by members of the bear brigade.
Recently supporters of bring Nelly May back offered an olive branch of sorts for the return of the missing cow.
“Although we have decided not to negotiate with bearorists, we have decided that bears at least deserve the right to cross the road safely. We hope that this peace offering is enough to convince the Bear Brigade that our beloved Nelly May should be returned safely and without further delay. The Nelson Farmers Market needs their mascot back!”

People living in and near Wintergreen Resort know firsthand the quality of the fire and rescue services available there. But Wintergreen Rescue recently got recognized across the region as The Outstanding EMS (emergency medical services) Agency within the Thomas Jefferson EMS Council
In order to receive the award TJEMS says:
-EMS agency that exemplifies outstanding professionalism and service to its community; whose
-High level of patient care is evident by innovative training, community awareness, preventive health programs,
-Public relations efforts and participation in local, regional and statewide EMS systems.
Virginia’s eleven regional EMS Councils conduct regional EMS Awards programs, hold recognition ceremonies and publicize the regional winners in their communities. This statewide regional recognition honors the exceptional contributions that members of Virginia’s EMS system make in their communities and help them to be more visible to the people they serve.
During the awards banquet TJEMS Executive Director Steven Rea highlighted some of the achievements which the selection committee viewed most favorably. “Our work in Nelson County through “D-Shift” was emphasized most heavily. Since that initiative began over 5,000 911 calls have been handled by our crews. We utilize equipment and stations which belong to the various volunteer agencies in the County. This arrangement is absolutely the most efficient, and allows public tax monies to be spent more appropriately on care providers rather than ambulances and supplies, ” said Curtis Sheets, WF&R Chief.
Chief Sheets went on to say that many local governments have tried the same approach with a few being successful. “However, ultimately most fail because the volunteers and the career crews allow their working relationship to break down. The end result is ridiculously expensive duplication. We have been under contract with Nelson County for 6 years and our relationship with the volunteer agencies is as strong or stronger than it has ever been. This is critically important because none of us can handle 100% of the workload and therefore we will all need each others help at some point,” Chief Sheets continued.
Another element highlighted at the ceremony was the list list of associated services provided to the community such as the “Healthy 12-Lead” (defibrillators) program and the “Durable Medical Equipment” program.
The Banquet was held in Greene County at the Stanardsville Volunteer Fire Department.
Wintergreen Rescue also received this award in 2006 and 2009.

Between rain showers and thunderstorms people got the chance to participate Tuesday afternoon in the annual Thomas Jefferson Soil and Water Conservation District Field Day held on Glenthorne Loop just south of Nellysford. The event gave folks the chance to learn about: mitigation banking, stream restoration, watershed studies, native landscaping, wildlife plantings, The American Chestnut Story & Hurricane Camille.
Attendees took refuge in a nearby garage when thunderstorms moved in.

Nelson Sheriff Brooks says the hikers have made it out with rescue crews and are now enroute to Augusta Medical to be checked out
The terrian was very tough and even after rescue crews located the missing couple, it took over two hours to get them out to a main road where they could be carried to a nearby hospital to be checked out.
Earlier 8AM Update
Nelson Sheriff David Brooks tells NCL that crews are with the two located hikers and are simply working to get them back to main roads. “Our agency got the call around 11PM last night. The Georgia couple set off a locater beacon that contacted a center in Georgia. The call came in as a medical emergency from GA authorities,” Sheriff Brooks said.
Crews located the couple near Harpers Creek and Maupin Field on the AT early Tuesday morning.
Search crews in Nelson County have found two hikers near Massey Mill and route 56, after going missing late last night.
Around 5:00 a.m. they found one man and one woman, both about 60-years-old. As of 6:00 a.m. Nelson County Emergency Service crews are trying to figure out how to get the pair out safely. They may move towards the Blue Ridge Parkway or try to head back down the mountain.

Millennium Group members organized on heck of a car and bike show this past weekend at the Heritage Center in Arrington, Virginia. “There were 77 registered cars and about 20 more that actually showed their cars but didn’t register. This was the 1st Annual Show~N~Tell Car & Bike Show,” said Louis Allen. Allen along with Stefforn Thompson organized the event. Money raised from the event goes to The Millennium Group Scholarship.

About two weeks before the official start of hurricane season and we already have a named tropical storm off of the Carolinas. Alberto reached tropical storm force Saturday afternoon with winds at that time around 45 MPH gusting to 55.
No immediate effect are expected here in Central Virginia and certainly no direct effects, period. The most we may see is some additional moisture thrown our way the first part of the coming week.
Reports from a ship near the center of Alberto indicate that the
cyclone is stronger than previously estimated. Based primarily on
the pressure data…maximum sustained winds are now estimated to be
60 mph…95 km/h. Little change in strength is expected over the
next couple of days and no changes to the official forecast are
required at this time.
And according to the NHC “Alberto is earliest-forming tropical storm in the Atlantic Basin since Ana in 2003.”

Local Nelson breweries including Blue Mountain Brewery, Devils Backbone Brewing and Wild Wolf Brewing will all benefit from a bill signed on Tuesday in Richmond.
Governor McDonnell today signed two pieces of legislation to support Virginia craft brewers at the Hardywood Park Craft Brewery. House Bill 359 (McClellan) allows manufacturers to lease space in their brewhouses to smaller-scale brewers and Senate Bill 604 (McWaters) allows retail sales of beer and sampling on the premises of Virginia breweries. The governor was joined by legislators, brewers from around the state, distributors, representatives from the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild, representatives from the Virginia Manufacturers Association, commissioner of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Neal Insley, and representatives from the Virginia Tourism Commission. After the bill signing the governor helped unveil a new logo for craft beer from the Virginia Tourism Commission “Virginia is for craft beer Lovers.” Virginia currently has 44 licensed breweries.
Speaking about the legislation, Governor McDonnell said, “This legislation positions Virginia’s craft brewers to grow and create more jobs in the Commonwealth. From Arlington to Abingdon, entrepreneurial Virginians are innovating and brewing critically acclaimed beers. The legislation signed today will make it easier for our breweries to serve as destinations for potential customers and allow some of our talented small-scale brewers to lease space from established brewers and overcome some of the significant start-up costs. I would like to thank Senator Jeff McWaters and Delegate Jennifer McClellan for their leadership as patrons in the House and Senate in passing these important bills. Growing Virginia’s craft breweries will grow Virginia manufacturing, agriculture and tourism jobs.”

Allows a brewery licensee to sell at retail the brands of beer that the brewery owns at premises described in the brewery license for on-premises consumption and in closed containers for off-premises consumption. The bill also allows these licensees to offer samples of the brewery’s products to individuals visiting the licensed premises, provided that such samples shall be provided only to individuals for consumption on the licensed premises and only to individuals to whom such products may be lawfully sold.

Requires the ABC Board to adopt regulations prescribing the terms and conditions under which a licensed brewery may manufacture beer pursuant to an agreement with a brand owner not under common control with the manufacturing brewery and sell and deliver the beer to the brand owner
