Virginia Beach Man Sentenced In Wintergreen Ski Lift Ticket Scheme
Via Wintergreen Police Department : Christopher Martin of Virginia Beach was recently sentenced in a ski lift ticket scheme. He was arrested after an undercover investigation by WPD.

A 28-year-old Virginia Beach man was sentenced in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court on June 5, 2012 after an investigation conducted by Wintergreen Police Investigator Steve Southworth of the Wintergreen Police Dept. and authorized by Nelson County Commonwealth’s Attorney Anthony Martin.
The investigation began in January 2012 when Wintergreen ski patrol observed several people with lift tickets that appeared different from official Wintergreen lift tickets. After being questioned, they told Wintergreen authorities that they purchased the tickets by email and thought they were valid tickets.
After investigators obtained the email subscriber information from a court-ordered request, investigators were led to 28 year old Christopher Martin from Virginia Beach. The purchasers of the counterfeit lift tickets all identified Martin as the person who sold them the tickets in Virginia Beach after looking at his driver’s license photo.
Southworth and Virginia Beach authorities then set up a sting operation on January 31, 2012. Martin was arrested after he sold 8 counterfeit ski lift tickets to an undercover detective for $320.00. After Martin’s arrest, officers found over a dozen more counterfeit tickets in his vehicle.
Virginia Beach authorities and Southworth charged Martin with the felony of obtaining money by false pretenses. Martin admitted to selling over $5,000.00 worth of counterfeit lift tickets to Wintergreen customers over the course of several months. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison all suspended on certain conditions. He was ordered to pay Wintergreen $5,360.00 in restitution and to be of good behavior and satisfy all rules of probation.

Guilty Plea Expected in Nelson Illegal Bear Organ Harvesting Case

Our Media Partners at CBS-19 in Charlottesville reported on Friday that Tracy Davis of Nelson County is expected to enter into a guilty plea on federal charges involving the illegal harvesting and sale of bear organs.

For several months the case involving Tracy Davis in Beech Grove has been in the headlines. On Friday our media partners at CBS-19 reported that Davis is expected to enter a guilt plea on June 18th involving the federal charges in the case.

“Authorities also said Davis trapped bears at George Washington National Forest near his home and sold their body parts.
Davis has a guilty plea hearing in the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Charlottesville scheduled for June 18.”

The outdoor ceremony capped off a long year for seniors who no leave the school heading out into the world. It was a day of reflection, sometimes sadness, and certainly one filled with excitement!

For years we’ve been telling you about the highly popular summer event, Starry Nights, over at Veritas Vineyard & Winery. They kicked of the 2012 season this past Saturday night with perfect weather as the backdrop.

The sassy salsa band Bio Ritmo out of Richmond kicked of the first Starry Nights of the 2012 season over at Veritas this past Saturday - June 9, 2012.

“Not patriotic, at all!” That’s how Paul Matheny describes the thief or thieves that took off with a giant american flag he recently placed near Route 151 in front of his BBQ place in Afton. “They took the whole thing down and just took off with it. I was trying to do something to show patriotism,” Paul told us by telephone a few days ago.

Good Progress Continues On Installation Of Fiber Internet In Nelson County

An ambitious project that’s been in the works for years is getting very close to a reality. We told you about the groundbreaking of the project here back in December 2011.

Once completed, the backbone (the main fiber line) which was done under a federal grant and monies kicked in by the county, will be available for vendors to hook to and eventually provide service to homes and businesses across many portions of the county that are underserved with true high speed internet.

Initially several larger anchor tenants will connect to the network with other smaller businesses and eventually likely residential customers to follow over time as more vendors make the service available.

Contrary to rumors circulating, this is not a free wi-fi network being installed by the county, nor is this anything associated whatsoever with the now failed IBEC BPL service that was once available. The projects are not related.

Recent estimates on the lighting (turning on) of the fiber for testing are just weeks away.

After a stormy Friday, this past Saturday could have been more perfect for Birds Over The Bistro, an event held by Basic Necessities to benefit the Wildlife Center of Virginia. The center located in Waynesboro, was formed in 1982 to provide quality health care, often on an emergency basis, to native wildlife.

In addition to wine tastings, Basic put on a spread of tasty cheeses, crackers, and fruit as part of the event that raised money for The Wildlife Center of Virginia.

People from across the area joined in this past Saturday to Hike Wintergreen. It was a collaboration between Wintergreen Resort & The Wintergreen Nature Foundation. It consisted of five diverse trails with varying levels of difficulty providing adventures for the novice hiker to the advanced trailblazer.

Anthropologist Cathy Knowles, a volunteer on the hike, explains how primitive stone tools are easily found on the trail paths.

Five different unique trails were part of Hike Wintergreen:

-1 mile Appalachian Amble – An interpretive hike for adventurers of all ages
-2.5 mile Cliffs Challenge – A hike for those able adventurers
-6.5 Mile Wintergreen Highland – For intermediate adventurers
-14 mile Devils Wlakabout – Advanced adventurere only
-14 mile Perimeter Purgatory – Difficult/advanced trail running experience
