LYNCHBURG-Activities at the Lockn’ Music Festival at Oak Ridge in Nelson County will begin to wind down today and motorists along US 29 in the area should be alert to heavier-than- normal traffic into midday Monday, Sept. 9.
Festival attendees are expected to begin leaving the Oak Ridge area this afternoon. Traffic will steadily increase throughout the day with highest volume upon completion of the event at 11:00 p.m.
Traffic leaving Oak Ridge will enter US 29 North. Motorists wanting to go southbound will make a U-turn at a designated crossover approximately 1 mile north of Oak Ridge Road. Thru traffic northbound will merge into the right travel lane.
Law enforcement personnel will monitor and assist with traffic.
Motorists are urged to use caution throughout this area and watch for stopped or slow moving vehicles.

With some crisp cool weather settling in at night, you know high school football is back in action. Friday night the Nelson County High Governors were at home against the Page County Panthers. Sadly the losing streak Nelson had going last season wasn’t broken. The Panthers won 14-9.

Nelson County, VA After a tense start with traffic at a standstill on Thursday as it entered the first ever Lockn’ Festival in Nelson County, things are going much more smoothly Friday. “It was intense. Volunteers just walked off the job and thousands of us in cars were left to fend for ourselves. I arrived around 9AM Thursday and finally made it in around 6:30pm,” Andy Stillman told us. On Friday Andy said things were very smooth sailing and he had no problems getting back in.

Drivers in the area reported no problems on area highways in and near Lovingston either late Friday afternoon.”Just came back for the Dollar General and the Nelson Library. Traffic was not an issue at all. Seemed like a very quiet Friday. You would not even know there was a festival in town. Food Lion was not busy, the gas stations were not busy, Vito’s was completely empty as were many other local businesses for a Friday. Hours after arriving thousands of people are still trying to make their way into the Lockn’ Festival in Nelson County. People arriving early in the day were still sitting in line around 7PM Thursday evening trying to get in. Facebook was littered with posts showing the frustration of those who were waiting in 90° sunshine for most of the day.
Late in the afternoon Lockn’ organizers placed the following message and apology for the wait on their FB page.
On the positive side, still thousands more had made it inside the grounds and to the stage!

As we’ve been discussing for days, Lockn’ Festival was on the way for Nelson County. Thursday morning the traffic started pouring in for what will be a four day long music event ending on Sunday September 8th. Numerous reports of traffic congestion in some areas were already coming in Thursday morning, but the bulk of traffic is expected the closer toward the weekend as people get off Friday.
As seen above, Blue Mountain Brewery’s Barrel House grounds in Arrington / Colleen have been transformed for camping and celebrations. BMB highly encourages people to camp there and use their shuttle service to and from the festival avoiding all of the traffic hassles!

TRAFFIC SLOWS ON U.S. 29 IN NELSON COUNTY
Traffic volume increasing as opening of Lockn’ Music Festival takes place
LYNCHBURG – The traffic volume on U.S. 29 in Nelson County has increased significantly throughout the day and traffic is backed up on portions of U.S. 29 North and several roads leading to Oak Ridge and the Lockn’ Music Festival site. Motorists may wish to consider using Route 151 (Patrick Henry Highway) from the intersection of Route 29/151 in Amherst County to the intersection of Route 250/151 in Albemarle County as an alternate route. This route is not recommended for trucks.
Through Monday morning at the latest, access to crossovers between Oak Ridge Road (Route 635) and Tye River Road (Route 739) will be restricted and law enforcement will be monitoring various locations.
Motorists should be alert to several changes in traffic pattern in the area and follow the signage. Thru traffic on U.S. 29 South should use the right lane, while thru traffic on U.S. 29 North should use the left lane.
Southbound traffic going to the Festival or wanting to return northbound will make a U-turn approximately five miles south of the Oak Ridge Road crossover. Festival traffic will be moved to the right lane and follow signage to the event.

17 year old Alexis Murphy has been missing since August 3, 2013. Tuesday the FBI in Richmond announced they have positively identified one of the cell phones found in the case as one belonging to Alexis.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks confirms to BRLM Tuesday that a red sweater pulled from the Rockfish River last weekend does not belong to missing teen Alexis Murphy. “It’s did not belong to Alexis,” Sheriff Brooks told BRLM Publisher Tommy Stafford.
Meanwhile the FBI has confirmed one of the cell phones located does belong to Alexis. Press release via FBI Richmond:
Alexis Tiara Murphy’s disappearance on August 3, 2013; spawned a multi-agency law enforcement effort to investigate the circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Through community support and the media’s engagement law enforcement have received several hundred calls with potential leads; which investigators diligently continue to work through. As a result of the state-wide and national media coverage, some of these calls have been from outside the Commonwealth of Virginia; and are being prioritized and addressed as investigators deem appropriate.
During this investigation, the Murphy family and investigators requested the public’s assistance in locating Alexis’ phone. Law enforcement have since confirmed that several phones were recovered during the course of this investigation; however until analysis of items sent to the FBI Laboratory were completed it was not clear if any of the phones were Alexis’.
The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office of Nelson County and the Investigative Partners in the Murphy investigation are announcing that one of the phones located has since been positively identified as that of Alexis Murphy. Since this is an on-going sensitive investigation, where evidentiary items and search information is sealed; no further discussion will be entertained. This sole release of information is only being made to advise the public that we no longer need assistance looking for that one item.
In order to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure that Mr. Randy Allen Taylor gets a fair trial in Nelson County, Virginia, absolutely no further information will be released about this investigation.
This case continues to be investigated by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, the Virginia State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Nelson County Commonwealth Attorney Anthony Martin is prosecuting the case.

After a long and rainy summer Labor Day weekend ended on a sometimes rainy note, but not enough of a one to stop the annual labor day celebrations.
Folks turned out this past Labor Day weekend 2013 to stomp the grapes at Wintergreen Winery’s annual Romp, Stomp and Chomp Harvest Celebration.
At Wintergreen Resort the annual Arts & Craft show took place. It’s one of the last 2 or 3 events heading into fall before sights turn to ski season.

Traffic in and near Nelson & Albemarle counties is expected to be come very congested over the next week to 10 days. Sports & music events will be the major cause.
“According to the Traffic Operations Center in Staunton, these are temporarily in place to monitor traffic relative to the Lockn’ Festival and the home game at UVa in Charlottesville,” Paula Jones with VDOT in Lynchburg told us Friday afternoon.
Get ready, anyway you count it, the roads are about to get jammed packed in the coming days, and that’s not even counting the Labor Day weekend traffic!
