* WINDS…NORTHWEST INCREASING TO 20 TO 30 MPH BY DAYBREAK.
GUSTS 45 TO 50 MPH.

* IMPACTS…THE COMBINATION OF COLD TEMPERATURES AND STRONG
WINDS MAY CAUSE TO FROSTBITE AND HYPOTHERMIA. STRONG GUSTY WINDS WILL
ALSO LEAD TO BLOWING SNOW.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A WIND CHILL ADVISORY MEANS THAT VERY COLD AIR AND STRONG WINDS

2013 is outta here! Lots of people reported hearing thunder in the area around Nelson and Albemarle Counties on Tuesday night only to remember it was almost the New Year! The annual fireworks display at Wintergreen Resort is how many prepared to see the calendar change late Tuesday night, just a couple of hours before midnight. Our BRL Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura was there to capture some of the spectacular fireworks.

©2009-2013 Nelson County Life / Blue Ridge Life: Four years ago this is what hit much of Central Virginia. Here in Nelson where we are based this is what it looked like at our office. 2 feet of snow fell on the night of December 19th into the 20th in 2009.

Back on December 19, 2009 we were all in amazement as the snow just kept falling & falling. When it was over we piled up more than 2 feet of snow here at our office in Nelson County in less than 24 hours.

A Hummer makes its way along a partially plowed Route 151 in Nelson County, VA on December 20th 2009. This was the only way to get to may people stranded by the blizzard.

Not to worry, not even a remote chance of seeing something like this between now & Christmas 2013.

Most everyone knows The Blue Toad for their huge selection of beers from right here in Nelson to those from around the world. But it’s the fruit and waffle bar that’s got owner Todd Rath excited lately. “We still have our eggs, omelets and other breakfast cooked to order, but this give people dropping by for brunch something different,” Todd recently told us.

Just in time for the official start to ski season at Wintergreen Resort, light snow fell overnight into Saturday. A Winter Weather Advisory continues across the entire area through Saturday and Saturday night. Mixed wintry precipitation will fall in the lower elevations with mainly snow above 1500′ feet.

By the way winter officially starts in less than 10 days on December 21st.

I’d say it has a great head start!
