State Senator Creigh Deeds Pushes Bill – Could Stop Dominion From Using 2004 Law To Survey For Pipeline

0

Nelson County, Virginia
Senator Creigh Deeds says he has a problem with a 2004 law passed in Virginia that allows gas companies to go onto private property and survey without permission. In Nelson County a large number of property owners are refusing to let Dominion survey. Anchor / Reporter Rachel Ryan of our media partner over at CBS-19 talked with Senator Deeds about his thoughts on the current law and his proposed changes. Click above to view her story.

In a related story, Federal Judge Michael Urbanski in Harrisonburg heard arguments from 5 Nelson property owners that have challenged Dominion’s right to survey property under the 2004 law. The judge heard from both sides and said he would write an opinion in the coming days. More here in this Nelson County Times story.

Nelson County investigators are looking for the person responsible for a Wednesday night holdup at Patrick Brothers Grocery in Afton. “Around 9PM Wednesday night an unknown male, possibly Hispanic, came into the store with a gun,” said Lt. Billy Mays, Chief Investigator with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department.

Mays said the clerk described the robber wearing a heavy dark coat with red bandanna covering his face.

“The suspect demanded the cashier empty the cash drawer, then fled on foot to the north,” Lt. Mays added.

The sheriff’s office requested a tracking dog from Augusta County and was able to track for a short distance.

The investigation continues and deputies will be checking the area today for more evidence.

Lt. Mays is asking anyone with information or that perhaps saw something suspicious, to please call the sheriff’s office at: 434.263.7050

Within hours of Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks’ announcement that he will retire at year’s end, the Nelson Sheriff’s lead investigator, Lt. Billy Mays announced he will be running for Sheriff later this year.

Lovingston
Nelson County, Virginia

Within hours of the retirement announcement by Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks, his chief investigator Lt. Billy Mays made it official they he will be running for Nelson County Sheriff.

“I decided to run for a variety of reasons. Early in my career I always knew I would advance, but wasn’t sure I’d ever be in a position to run for sheriff. There were always too many people ahead of me. This opportunity has presented itself and I’ve decided to go with it,” Mays told BRL Wednesday afternoon by phone.

Lt. Mays got his start in Central Virginia law enforcement back in 2000, first as a road deputy then as a criminal investigator and narcotics officer. He arrived at the Nelson County Sheriff’s office in 2010 and after a short time as a deputy advanced to the department’s chief investigator.

Lt. Mays was very involved and instrumental in the arrest and conviction of Randy Taylor in the Alexis Murphy case. A crime gaining international attention.

It’s early but I wanted people to know I will be running and I want to continue to work at making the department as respected as possible.

Lt. Mays said he will define more of his vision for the department in the coming weeks and months as the campaign swings into full motion.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks Announces Retirement At End Of Current Term

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks told his staff first and then BRLM today they he will retire at the end of his term of office on December 31, 2015.
Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks told his staff on Wednesday he will retire at the end of his term of office on December 31, 2015.

Lovingston
Nelson County, Virginia

After two elections as sheriff of Nelson county and over 3 decades in the law enforcement / corrections arena, Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks will hang up his badge for good at the end his current term that finishes on December 31, 2015. “After 31 years, it’s been long enough and I want to spend more time with family,” Sheriff Brooks told us Wednesday. Brooks has been steadfastly alongside his wife Sherri in her battle against cancer over the past several years, in addition to caring for other family members. Sheriff Brooks said it’s time to spend quality time with all of them. “It can be apprehensive about the unknown, but after the pros and cons, I thought it was time to retire.”

David Brooks was first elected Sheriff of Nelson County in back in November of 2007 and took office the following January. He ventured into law enforcement first by working for the Department of Corrections in 1985 and then became a dispatcher / jailer for then Sheriff Bill Harris. In 1998 he became a road deputy under Sheriff Ronald Wood and held that position until his successful bid for Sheriff in 2007 when Sheriff Gary Brantley decided to retire leaving the office open. In 2011 Brooks was narrowly re elected after a heated recount against Mac Bridgwater who unsuccessfully tried for the seat twice in past elections.

Brooks has few regrets and says mostly he will miss his staff and the people he comes in contact with daily. “My toughest times in office were the murder cases of Opal Page and then most recently Alexis Murphy. But the flip side of that is being able to have apprehended the people responsible. But we won’t, and if it takes that long, I’m sure my successor won’t give up on locating Alexis.”

When we asked what Sheriff Brooks might do in addition to spending more time with his family after he leaves office in December, he did say he might look at other options down the road. “I may explore other avenues later on, but for now it will be about spending time with my family.”

This year’s sheriff’s election will be held on November 3rd. Non party (independents) have until June 9th at 7PM to file their petition to run. Specific party candidates have until June 15th at 5PM to file, according to Jacqueline Britt, The Nelson County Election Registrar.

Most people in the immediate Central Virginia Blue Ridge area didn’t see much from this latest round of snow that fell. But, a couple of inches of new snow fell in the overnight hours Monday. That brings the total to about 4″ (since Sunday) in the highest of elevations near Wintergreen Resort. Especially on Devils Knob.
