Nelson County, Virginia

It’s been a tough few months for The Blue Ridge Pig in Nellysford. Back in November 2014 we told you about a fire in the smokehouse that pretty much destroyed the wooden part. Despite the damage Strawberry remained open. Today it’s all repaired.

On Thursday afternoon an auto accident in from of the Nellysford landmark took the famous pig on a pole down to the ground!

Not to worry, the business remains open and thankfully the people involved in the accident weren’t seriously hurt.

We’re waiting to see when the pig goes back on the pole!

They made it this past Saturday evening – February 21, 2015 after a large snowfall ranging between 10-14 inches fell across Nelson County.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

A massive winter storm dumped between 5-6 inches in sections off to the east in places like Charlottesville to an incredible 11-14 inches in sections of Nelson County on the eastern side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Dozens of accidents happened during the storm and many people were stranded until later in the day Sunday when temps soared to near an incredible 60° with lots of thawing.

Many school systems never got back into session from last week’s winter weather and some are starting their second week with no school. On Tuesday schools in Nelson will have a two hour delay vs being completely closed.

For a listing of closings and delays click here for our media partners over at The Newsplex in Charlottesville, or WHSV in Harrisonburg by clicking here.

Tommy says things generally stay on the cold side for the coming week, but not as bad as last week. There’s the chance for another winter system arriving late in the week as well.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

For the second time in less than a week, a round of heavy snow hit the Central Virginia Blue Ridge area. In spite of the NWS in Baltimore / DC office only issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for the area, severe travel problems and dozens and dozens of accidents were reported by early afternoon. Heavy snow continued to fall as of 1:40 PM Saturday.

Temps will eventually warmup late Saturday into Sunday with the snow changing to rain, flooding may become an issue.

You knew it was bound to happen. With all of the below freezing and subzero temps experienced here in the Blue Ridge, plumbers have been in high demand. “15 voicemails just this morning,” Jon Goff told us. His dad Jeff has been a plumber here in the Blue Ridge for years and even for them the calls are huge. (Many may know Jon from our February issue cover, he’s the writer photographer for that edition)

Just some of the gear Jeff Goff loads his truck down with the help in thawing pipes across the area.

Jeff Goff and his son Jon have spent the better part of the past several days just un-thawing pipes under houses. Above a propane heater is used to bring the temperature under a house above freezing.

Jon says one of the most important things to remember during the extreme cold is to leave your faucet dripping so the water can’t freeze, along with insulating your pipes.

In Tommy’s Weather the cold is expected to continue but a brief thaw is on the way Sunday when temps will reach the mid and upper 40’s with rain. Before then another winter storm is expected on Saturday.
