This comes as no surprise to those of us living in the shadows of Mac Country Store in Roseland near the intersection of Route 151 and Crabtree Falls Highway. For years they’ve been serving up delicious fried chicken! The best around. Since current owner Betty Brown took it over several years ago, some top notch potato salad and pimento cheese have entered the picture too. Mac’s has been a long time advertiser in the pages of BRL, touting their yummy fried chicken.

Recently, a national writer by the name of Hawk Krall remembered stopping at Mac’s over ten years ago, and remembered the chicken. Years later he finally found the place again. Paydirt! Hawk recently wrote about revisiting Mac’s in the article below for Saveur Magazine. It’s a very nice writeup. Check it out!

Virginia State Police released the following information this Wednesday – May 25, 2016 regarding the fatal plane crash in Orange County.

“At 4:31 p.m. Tuesday (May 24, 2016), Virginia State Police were notified of a plane crash in the 1,000 block of Tinder Lane in Orange County. The plane was a 2007 Jihlavan KP 5 ASA, fixed-wing, single-engine aircraft, and was classified as experimental.

The crash location was at the at the intersection of Tinder Lane and Ridge Field Lane (both are private roads) located in a rural section of Orange County near Mine Run.”

There were two confirmed fatalities: the pilot, Charles Neal Caldwell, 57, of Apopka, Florida, and passenger as John Joseph Quinn Jr., 81, of Culpeper, Virginia.

The Virginia State Police along with the Medical Examiner’s Office, NTSB and FAA are investigating the incident to determine the causative factors that lead to the crash.

Rockfish Valley Area Plan: Public Survey & June 28 Public Meeting

Many studies have been done over the past decade concerning the rapid growth of the Rockfish Valley in Northwestern & Central Nelson County.

The county’s Economic Development Authority and Tourism Office in conjunction with the Nelson Buiding Deoartment is seeking input on the future of development, tourism, agriculture and infrastructure, roads and more in the Rockfish Valley.

“You are invited to join the Rockfish Valley Area Plan (RVAP) process and make your voice heard regarding important community issues in the Rockfish Valley! Please consider actively participating in the RVAP project by:

completing and submitting the public survey and/or other public participation materials; and
attending upcoming public meetings (next meeting is June 28th.”

This public meeting is an opportunity for members of the public to learn more about the planning project, and to share your questions, concerns, and opinions. Each presentation will be followed by Q&A sessions with staff from Nelson County and TJPDC

All members of the public are invited to participate in the Rockfish Valley Area Plan by taking the online Public Survey (Click on this link) or by completing a paper copy of the public survey (below).

We’ve been telling you about Silverback Distillery long before they actually opened here in Nelson County.


Above, writer / photographer Marcie Gates’ story about Denver and Christine Riggleman’s plans to open the Distillery.

Since opening, they have a noted history in just a short time of winning awards for their Vodka and Gin. But it’s their newest release of Rye Whiskey that’s generating the current buzz.

Blackback Rye "Lucky 13" was introduced during regular business hours in a partial release to club members and investors this past Saturday evening at Silverback Distillery. A much broader widespread release is scheduled for Father's Day Weekend.

“It was incredible to see everyone’s faces and how happy they were when the whiskey touched their lips. We have worked so hard and so many long days to get to this point and it is wonderful how every Silverback customer supports our family and brand. It’s humbling,” said Christine Riggleman, CEO and Distiller at Silverback in Afton.

People on hand that tried the “Lucky 13” Saturday evening said that in spite of its relatively short aging (just over a year) the taste was very smooth and pleasing.

“Our Blackback Rye “Lucky 13” is a fairly young whiskey, Aged 13 months. Customers were so excited for a whiskey… And this whiskey is so flavorful that we felt comfortable releasing it at this time. Denver came up with labeling the batch “Lucky 13″. We are providing a product made with Virginia grains, purified Nelson county water and aged in premium, select barrels,” Christine continued.

Silverback also touts being very local in the production of this whiskey according to this post on their Facebook page discussing preliminary details of the Father’s Day Weekend release.

“With a mash bill that includes Rye from Three Monkeys Farm LLC and Corn and Malted Barley from Wood’s Mill Malt House, we know BLACKBACK RYE is the best in the global jungle. Milled to perfection at Lockes Mill and using exquisite Char #3 barrels from The Barrel Mill, BLACKBACK RYE is dark and rich, with spice, mint and vanilla competing for space on your palate,”

Many area fire crews responded to a fully involved house fire on Monday after on Mayswood Lane just south of Lovingston. According to the LVFD Facebook page, “At approximately 4:20pm, we were dispatched along with Piney River VFD for the report of a fully involved structure fire on Mayswood Ln in Lovingston. Faber VFD and Gladstone VFD were immediately requested for Tanker assistance due to the location. Roseland Rescue responded with drinking water and Rockfish Valley VFD also responded a Tanker.”

Update: 6:30pm from NCSO

The Nelson County Sheriff has identified the female body found in Massie Mill area as Samantha Rena Tyree, a 29 year old female from Shipman Virginia. The case is being worked by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. No further information is available at this time

Nelson County Sheriff David Hill has confirmed that a female body was located Monday evening in the Massies Mill area of Nelson County.

Former Nelson County Sheriff Brooks Indicted On Four Counts : Updated 5.13.16 – 10:25 AM
Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks told his staff first and then BRLM today they he will retire at the end of his term of office on December 31, 2015.

The Virginia State police released their official statement Friday morning at 9:23 AM. Here it is verbatim:

“Two Nelson County residents face multiple charges after turning themselves in to Virginia State Police Thursday (May 12, 2016). William D. Brooks, 54, of Shipman, Va., and Rebecca Adcock, 58, of Piney River, Va., were arrested Thursday and released on their own recognizance.

In November 2015, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office initiated an investigation into the allegation that Brooks, while employed by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, directed members of the sheriff’s office to use public funds to conduct a non-law enforcement investigation in the City of Lynchburg in October 2013. Adcock was employed by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and was actively involved in the “investigation.”

A multi-jurisdictional grand jury handed up the following indictments as a result of the investigation:
Brooks: 1 felony count of embezzlement by officer of public funds
1 misdemeanor count of unlawful videotaping of another
1 misdemeanor count of unlawful dissemination of a video of another
1 misdemeanor count of malfeasance

Adcock: 1 misdemeanor of unlawful videotaping of another
1 misdemeanor count of obstruction of justice

The incident remains under investigation.
