Just before 10 AM Sunday morning fire crews with the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fully involved house fire on Gladstone Road. “Seven people were displaced. The Red Cross will be assisting them,” said Captain Derek Kidd with the Lovingston Volunteer Fire Department. Their crews provided operations and water supply support to Gladstone.

“A two-year-old child was flown to the hospital from a crash on Valley Street in Scottsville. It happened near the intersection of Hardware Street just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Albemarle County police say the driver of a pickup truck was headed north on Route 20 when it was hit head-on by a sedan headed southbound. Police say the sedan then spun around and hit a telephone poll.”

Nelson : Faber – Police Pursuit Ends When Suspect Crashes

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office along with the Virginia State Police were involved in a pursuit on RT. 29 in the Lovingston area earlier today. The pursuit started with a call into Nelson County 911 about shots being fired from a vehicle.

Photo Via NCSO : The driver was arrested and identified as James J.“Jeffery” Harris, a 21 year old W/M from Faber, Virginia. The pursuit ended when the subject wrecked his vehicle at the intersection on Rt. 29 and Rockfish River Road. Mr. Harris was taken into custody at the scene.

A firearm and other items were recovered from the vehicle. Mr. Harris was charged with eluding police, shooting into an occupied vehicle, shooting from a vehicle, possession of drugs, hit and run and several other driving violations.

Harris is being held at the Albemarle Regional Jail without bond.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

After three days or rain, we finally get a break on Wednesday with sunshine and much warmer temps returning to the area.

For the the period from April 21 to April 25th we picked up 2.52 inches of rain at our BRL-Maple Brook Farm location in Roseland of Nelson County. Click on the image above to see more details.
Up top at our BRL-Nature Foundation at Wintergreen Station at 3500 feet they picked up just under 4″ of rain between Saturday and the end of the day Tuesday. Click on image above to see more detail.

We dry out for the next couple of days and the heat increases. There’s a chance for scattered afternoon thunderstorms returning to the forecast by Thursday night into Friday. The storms will be widely scattered and nothing like we’ve just seen with days and days of rain.

The Flood Watch is now in effect for

* Portions of North Carolina and Virginia, including the
following areas, in North Carolina, Caswell, Rockingham,
Stokes, Surry, Wilkes, and Yadkin. In Virginia, Amherst,
Appomattox, Bedford, Botetourt, Campbell, Charlotte, Franklin,
Halifax, Henry, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Roanoke, and
Rockbridge.

* Through Tuesday morning

* Moderate to heavy rain will take place, with an additional 1 to
2 inches of rain likely through tonight, in some cases this
rain falling on-top of the 2 to 4 inches of rain that has
already occurred. The heaviest rain thus far has fallen south of
Roanoke along the Blue Ridge and into North Carolina. This
particular region will be most susceptive to flooding.

* The duration and widespread nature of the heavy rainfall is
expected to result in significant rises and potential flooding
on area streams, with flooding also possible along some main
stem rivers into Tuesday. Additionally, heavier short term
rainfall rates associated with bands of heavy rain showers could
result in localized flash flooding along small streams and in
urban areas. Saturated ground may also result in downed trees
and rock or mud slides. Water will likely inundate poor drainage
areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

associated with bands of heavy rain showers could result in
localized flash flooding along small streams and in urban areas.
Saturated ground may also result in downed trees and rock or
mud slides.

For years we have been hearing about the coming Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Approval for the very controversial project continues winding its way through regulatory channels.

Many Nelson and adjoining county landowners continue their opposition to the pipeline.


Above Richard Averitt of Nelson County, Virginia discusses his opposition and plans against the Atlantic Coast Pipeline that is proposed to run through his property just south of Nellysford.

In a recent video released, Nelson resident, landowner, and businessman Richard Averitt discusses his reasons for opposition to the proposed ACP.

“You will hear me talk about the ridiculous price they want me to accept for the easement. Please know that there is NO price I would accept. I will never sell out my community,” Averitt says in the 5 minute video and Facebook / YouTube post.

He challenges those that have not signed their easement agreements already with Dominion to take the ACP AND MVP BURN YOUR EASEMENT CHALLENGE.

It looked like rain and it felt like rain, but for a few hours it held off for the first ever Rockfish River Elementary School Earth Day 5K and Fun Run. Blue Ridge Life was a sponsor of the charter event along with many other area businesses.

Many area businesses pitched in to help make the race possible.

In spite of the threatening skies, the turnout was good and lots of kids and adults participated in the races.

Rockingham : I-81 Southbound Rest Area Briefly Closing On April 25th

The safety rest area on southbound Interstate 81 in Rockingham County is scheduled to close from 6 a.m. to 12 noon on Tuesday, April 25, for shoulder repairs in the truck-parking area. In addition, shoulder repairs in the I-81 northbound rest area will limit the number of truck parking spaces from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Both of these rest areas are near I-81 mile marker 262 in the New Market area. All work is weather permitting.

Augusta County : VSP Investigating Fatal Motorcycle Crash : Updated 4.21.17 – 3:40 PM

At approximately 8:05 a.m. on April 20, Trooper S.J. Nicely Jr responded to a single-vehicle crash in Augusta County.

Harry S. Judy, 60, of Bridgewater, was riding his motorcycle southbound on Wise Hollow Road (Route 698) north of Summit Church Road (Route 690) when he lost control of the vehicle. The motorcycle and driver slid off the right side of the road, striking an embankment and a street sign.

Judy was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

At 8:10 a.m., Thursday (April 20, 2017), Virginia State Police responded to a fatal motorcycle crash in Augusta County. The crash occurred in the 200 block of Wise Hollow Road. The motorcyclist died at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
