10 PM VERBATIM UPDATE FROM VSP :
“ At the request of Waynesboro Police Chief David Shaw, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place Wednesday (April 10, 2024) on Interstate 64.
According to Waynesboro Police, they received an emergency call for a shooting at Parkway Village Apartments in the city shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. As officers were responding to the apartment complex, they observed the shooting suspect’s vehicle fleeing the scene. As officers continued to respond to the shooting scene, other officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the fleeing vehicle, a Lincoln MKZ. The suspect refused to stop and sped away. A pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued over Afton Mountain into Albemarle County and came to a stop along the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 102 mile marker when the Lincoln ran off the Interstate and crashed into the guardrail. This occurred at approximately 5:38 p.m. After approximately an hour of trying to get the adult male suspect to peacefully surrender, shots were fired. The man was transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
No law enforcement personnel were injured during the course of the incident. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
The officer-involved shooting remains under investigation by state police.
