Some snow flurries and snow squalls were expected Saturday afternoon in the higher elevations. But, the accumulating snow experienced up at Wintergreen was a bit of a surprise.

A snow emergency message was sent out by fire and police agencies around 5:30 PM Saturday.
“We are currently experiencing extremely hazardous road conditions on the mountain. Several car accidents are in progress. Wintergreen Drive has been closed at the Police Department. Please do not travel within Wintergreen or attempt to return to Wintergreen until this situation is resolved.”
At 6:56 PM an all roads open message was sent out.
“All roads are now open. Thank you for your patience.”
At one point traffic was stopped and backed up from the gatehouse below all the way out to Beech Grove Road. Numerous wrecks with cars in ditches were reported at several locations on the mountain.

Traffic up and down the mountain was stopped for a period of time, and as of 6:20 PM some of the roadways are still closed as plows clear the snow to get roads open.
