Nelson County, Virginia
Five years ago today our first issue hit the stands here in Nelson County and the surrounding area. How things have changed in those 60 months! But one thing has remained the same, our love for Nelson County, and our gratitude to you our readers for the huge support over the past five years.

Since that first issue, lots has happened. Elections, droughts, businesses come and gone. This website has grown by leaps and bounds. Nearly 1000 of you a day check us out, and when the weather is bad or something else happens, that increases by as much as 8 times. And, our Facebook and Twitter sites are busier than ever! Over 800 of you follow us daily just on Facebook. You name it. It’s been a busy 5 years indeed!

Our permanent arrival in Nelson was 2004. Months later we took the magazine idea we had years ago as television news reporters, and launched it here. We haven’t a regret, and we haven’t looked back. What a welcome reception, and a wonderful place to live!

One big change in the past five years was the arrival of Junior Publisher, Adam Stafford back in 2008! Nelson native, Earl Hamner writes about Adam and our 5 years in this month's issue. Click the image above to read it!

By far the biggest change in our lives was the arrival of Adam back in 2008. You’ve watched him grow up from nothing more than a little sprout! Rumor has it, on page 5, he may have company soon!

We can’t thank you enough for your continued support and friendship since we started the magazine back in 2005. What a journey!

We haven’t skipped a beat here on the website since it started, but in celebration of our 5 years, we are skipping a beat over the next day or so and the coming weekend. A break if you will! Not to worry, we’ll be nearby if something happens, but we are taking a day or two to reflect … and rest!

See you back here on Monday!

Enjoy the great weather and here’s to the next 5 years!

Thank you again!

Tommy, Yvette, & Adam

  1. My how time flies! I can’t tell you how much I enjoy NCL and look forward to every issue. My only complaint is that there are far too many photos of Tom Marker!

  2. Congrats NCL!

Non-profits frequently need to access media to get their message out. So frequently, unless there is a negative slant to the message, just getting a return call from mainstream media is a challenge. If you are lucky enough to get an appointment, you are completely at the mercy of every single event within a 60 mile radius which may end up being more newsworthy. NCL provides a real-time LOCAL venue for routine and at times not so routine reporting.

Thanks for your hard work and dedication.

  3. Hard to believe it has been five years since NCL monthly paper showed up at the newsstands. Local personal stories have made NCL standout different from other newspapers.
With the advent of NCL webpage, daily updates really started to take off. It wasn’t long before there were weather stations, scattered over the county, linked to the page and with a daily local forecast to boot.
It was neat being in Maine on vacation and checking the NCL page to learn that Adam had just been born.
Now with the new infusion of stimulus funds to improve county broadband access, NCL will become more important in the daily information needs of Nelson from videos to live cams.
Just think down the road another five years. Adam will have a playmate, older than he is now, and he will be old enough to write his own articles. Who knows, maybe he will get some tips and take after that young writer from Schuyler.

Best wishes for many great years to come!
    Henri & Elaine
