Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

It has been an incredible winter so far, and finally it appears we have a break for at least a few days, from snow that is! High winds will continue to kick up Thursday, but not as bad as they were on Wednesday.

Wednesday started out messy with accidents everywhere including a turkey truck that blocked much of 151 for a big part of the day in the vicinity of Bland Wade Road.

For the 9th day in a row, Nelson County Public Schools are also closed again today due to snow.

High winds also knocked out power last night to Wintergreen Resort and residents living on the top of the mountain. People living in Schuyler also had their power knocked out as well. Numerous trees and limbs were blown across roads across the county as well. By roughly midnight, power was back on in both of those locations. As of this morning according to CVEC, “there are 184 CVEC members affected by outages caused by the weekend winter storm. These are located predominantly in Fluvanna and Louisa Counties as well as a few in northern Cumberland and Buckingham counties, all areas that suffered widespead and significant damage. This area saw numerous downed trees, broken poles and wire on the ground. The remaining damage has been every bit as challenging as the damage that kept hundreds and thousands without power earlier in the restoration process. CVEC, with the assistance of reinforcement crews from Southside Virginia Electric Cooperative will be working to resolve the remaining issues and restore power to small clusters of homes and individuals in those areas.”

Thursday will still be a breezy day, but winds will begin dying down by Friday.

There is another chance for a wintry mix entering the forecast by as early as the overnight hours Sunday, but at this time, it does not appear major.

Enjoy the sunshine, even if it’s cold sunshine!

  1. We lost power at Wintergreen last night and CVEC did a wonderful job fixing the problem quickly. Well done CVEC! Nelson County Service Authority take note…..
