Sheriff David Brooks says all search activities for Comer have been called off at this time. “As far as any search by our agency, we have discontinued looking for Comer at this point, but do continue to monitor other avenues in the investigation,” Brooks told NCL Friday morning.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks tells us his department has yet to find any conclusive evidence that Comer indeed went hiking. The case is still being treated, Brooks says, as a missing person’s case.

NCL has learned that the missing Wintergreen hiker search teams are looking for is Mike Comer of Charlottesville, president of Glenmore Country Club.

According to Dana Quillen, public relations director for Wintergreen Resort, Comer, a Resort property owner, arrived at the Resort around noon Wednesday. He apparently went hiking that afternoon before thunderstorms erupted in the area. After Comer failed to return from his hike, his wife called police and filed a missing person’s report.

Search teams have set up a command post at the Resort and are continuing their search. We’ll have more information as it becomes available.

  1. Does anyone know approximately where Comer was supposed to have been hiking? Like which road, condo, or trail head he probably started from? I’d be up for checking the trails today, and it’d be nice to have a general idea of the best chance, closest to his starting point.

  2. Hi Bob. The sheriff tells us he is not convinced Mr. Comer did in fact take a hike. I know there are various news accounts out there saying that, and we initially did as well, but again the sheriff is not convinced he did. My understanding is they were looking in the vicinity of the Fir Tree Drive area yesterday then fanning out. That’s where our photographer, Paul Purpura, got shots of them unloading the dogs. Hope that helps. -T-

  3. Thanks Tommy. I understand that he may not be out there. That’s a pretty steep and somewhat rocky section, so if he was out there and got caught in the storm, he could’ve fallen off trail. I’m not going to go off the trail looking, but I’ll keep my eyes open. I was going to go out on the trails today anyway.

  4. Has anyone checked boarding records for flights to Buenos Aires? There seems to be a trend…..

  5. Since Brook’s department did not have the lead on this case what makes him the spokesperson for what is happening? Should we check with VDOT, the National Guard, PETA, etc. also?
