STAUNTON – (3 p.m.) Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 have reopened in Augusta County following cleanup and recovery from an early morning tractor trailer crash. The incident took place about 4 a.m. today (Tuesday, August 30) near mile marker 211 in the Greenville area. The truck’s cargo included a flammable powder, so incident response required hazardous-materials removal before travel lanes could reopen.

Motorists using northbound I-81 in northern Rockbridge County and southern Augusta County should be alert for lingering traffic congestion during the late-afternoon hours.

STAUNTON – (1:45 p.m.) The right lane of northbound Interstate 81 in Augusta County has reopened following cleanup from a tractor trailer crash and hazardous-materials spill. The incident took place about 4 a.m. today (Tuesday, August 30) and required the closure of northbound I-81 near mile marker 211 in the Greenville area.

The northbound I-81 detour at exit 200 has been lifted. Motorists should continue to expect significant backups on I-81 and Route 11 in northern Rockbridge County and southern Augusta County until the interstate fully reopens and congestion eases.

“At 3:48 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 30, 2022), Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Augusta County.  A tractor-trailer ran off Interstate 81 at the 211 mile marker and overturned in the median. The driver was flown to UVA Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

The tanker contains a flammable liquid and was damaged in the crash. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and county fire department are on scene to manage and mitigate the containment and clean up of the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.

VDOT STAUNTON 

(5:30 a.m.) Northbound Interstate 81 is closed in Augusta County due to a tractor trailer crash with hazardous materials spill near mile marker 211 in the Greenville area. The incident was reported to the Virginia Department of Transportation about 4 a.m. today (Tuesday, August 30). Both northbound lanes will remain closed until hazmat cleanup is complete.

Northbound I-81 traffic is detoured at exit 200 (Fairfield) in Rockbridge County. Drivers will follow Route 710 (Sterrett Road) east and then Route 11 north into Augusta County for about 13 miles, and rejoin I-81 northbound at exit 213.

VDOT advises motorists to expect major delays in southern Augusta County and northern Rockbridge County on northbound I-81 and Route 11. Avoid this area if possible.
