Don’t you just love it when you see folks doing something good…No I mean really good. moving some place, taking a leap of faith, and doing in their heart what they know’s right. That’s Ken and Yvonne Harris. They’ve made Afton and the Rockfish Valley their home. Heck, they’re already raising the next generation of Harris’ now. Farming and farming right is the way they do things.
At a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton. They’re as close to the farm as you can get with plenty of fresh meats and vegetables.
They tell me right now they have veggie start, 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage. And soon they’ll have 26 types of heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT HOT HOT HOT, did I say HOT, YIKES! peppers!
They’ve already got; asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.
And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:

-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free ChickenNot to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with fruit trees ready for the spring planting! It’s time!

Our Christina Kline grabbed the beautiful shot above of the spring blooms near Greenfield, a sure sign of those warmer temps we’ve had lately. Many of our NCL Weathernet Stations have reported 80° or above lately. The weather has been so nice you can raise the windows and let the warm breezes in!
Saturday ended up being a fairly nice day overall. Though we started the first half of the day with showers and even thunderstorms.
John Taylor from Wintergreen Mountain wrote in Saturday morning to tell us about the brief thunderstorm they had up there. Our NCL-(TWNF) Nature Foundation Station shows they picked up just over a 1/3 of an inch of rain in that downpour, while other areas of the county only saw sprinkles. Then the sun came out.
The afternoon in most of Nelson was dry and warm with 80+ degree readings. The majority of thundershowers were to our SE by afternoon and though redevelopment may happen in the early evening hours of Saturday, the likelihood is becoming less and less. The bigger story will be colder temps funneling in behind the exiting cold front to our east. Some breezy conditions will occur overnight, but diminish a bit after midnight.
Showers and some pockets of sleet develop on Sunday. The possibility of snow showers exists Sunday night into Monday morning as temps drop to the low and mid 30’s valley and upper 20’s mountains.
We start out next week cool and dry, but warm back to the 70’s by late week.

Next week starts off cool with highs Monday in the lower 50’s under cloudy skies. Tuesday we warm to the mid & upper 50’s with partly sunny skies. By Wednesday through Friday temps rise back to the mid 60’s to middle 70’s.

Yesterday, Ken delivered my Spring Gardening supplies (in the form of Great
Looking Soil, Pine mulch & wood chips) and he did it on time and at a very
reasonable delivery charge. He and an associate off-loaded the materials and I
am “almost” ready for spring. Thanks for your continuing comments about those
two people and their facility — they are super!

What a storm we had up here late in the 6 am hour Saturday morning! According to
our rain gauge, we only had 3/8 of an inch — but it all seemed to fall in about
15 minutes. There was some lightning and thunder but it was hard to discern over
the downpour. A few minutes later the sun was out.
