Wintergreen Resort
Nelson County, Virginia

It’s always a crap shoot as to exactly what kind of weather will be on hand for the annual Mardi Gras Celebration at Wintergreen Resort. March can always throw a curve ball, snow, rain, or hot weather! Winter will still return for a few more weeks. Last year our Hayley Osborne grabbed these shots.

For 2009 it was an afternoon high temperature reading of 73.8° as folks showed off their best costumes while heading down the slopes! NCL’s Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura was there to capture all of the fantastic sights on the slopes.

Paul tells us: “There were three participants Adaptive Skiing, Ski Patrol, and finally the Snow Sports School. Adaptive Skiing’s theme was the Wizard of Oz but there were several dressed as other super heroes as well. Ski Patrol’s theme was “Hook” with Greg Bradley playing none other than the proverbial Captain Hook. (We interviewed him several years ago.) Finally, the theme of the Snow Sports School was a Toga Party taken from the annals of Animal House.” Toga, toga, toga, toga, toga. Food Fight!!!!

Pretty graceful.

Toga, toga, toga, toga!

  1. Spring is not far away Tommy.

On my way home from teaching yesterday, I was walking up the hill to my house and saw one of the first harbingers of spring — a robin. So if I saw a robin up here at 3,200 feet, I know they must also be in the valley. I also noticed some Red Maple and Bradford Pear trees starting to bud in the Rockfish Valley as well.

I will be ready to hang up my skis in a couple of weeks and will be focusing my camera on one of the most beautiful events that occurs in this part of the country. It inspired the composer Aaron Copeland so much that he wrote music about it — Appalachian Spring.

    Best regards,
