Route 58 eastbound (Bill Tuck Highway) at the intersection of Route 501 (Huell Mathews Highway) – Milling and Paving. Lane closures expected nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the week of September 8. Use caution.

Route 501 Southbound (Halifax Road) from Powell Road to Hamilton Blvd.

Milling and Paving. Lane closures expected nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. the week of September 8, 2025. Use caution.

Route 662 (Ashton Hall Road) – Culvert replacement (36.659126, -79.111580). Closed to through traffic between Route 659 (River Road) and Route 658 (Melon Road). Estimated completion September 2025.

Nelson County:

Route 6 (Afton Mountain Road) from Route 151 (Critzer Shop Road) to Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike)- Milling and Paving. Closed to traffic. Detour is posted. Use caution. Estimated completion October 2025.

Route 653 (Wilson Road) – Bridge Replacement. The bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad is closed (37.703194, -78.870712). Estimated reopening November 2025.

Route 360 (Patrick Henry Highway) over Grade Crossing West of Meherrin – Crossover construction. Lane closures expected on Route 360 (Patrick Henry Highway). Use caution. Estimated completion October 2025.

Route 628 (Germantown Road) over Rte. 15/460 Bypass (Prince Edward Highway) – Traffic reduced to one lane with temporary traffic signals in place on Route 628

(Germantown Road) and lane closures expected on Route 15/460 Bypass (Prince Edward Highway). Use caution. Estimated completion October 2025.

Highway Work Zones in the VDOT Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 9 to 12, eastbound and westbound – Single lane and shoulder closures for bridge inspections, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

*UPDATE* Exit 35, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures along off-ramps for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 18 (West Indian Valley Road) – Flagger traffic control between Covington city limits and Route 657 (Pitzer Ridge Road) for ditch cleaning operations, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 42 (Forty Two Road) – Single-lane traffic near Route 636 (Morgan Drive) for maintenance to bridge over railway. Temporary traffic signals in operation 24/7. Wide-load tractor trailers are prohibited. Estimated project completion September 30.

*NEW* Route 269 (Longdale Furnace Road) – Shoulder closures near Clark Lane intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 218 to 221, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. on nights through October 16.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures as needed for construction of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Single-lane traffic on southbound I-81 ramp to I-64 eastbound at exit 221 through November 2025. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7 through spring 2026. Traffic restrictions are for I-81 widening project. Work zone speed limit 60 miles an hour.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 226 to 228, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge painting, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Saturday night (September 13).

*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) – Single lane closures between Route 56 (Tye River Turnpike) and Route 666 (Lofton Road) for tree removal operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound and southbound single lane closures between Route 781 (Bald Rock Road/Mill Race Road) and Route 1930 (Rolla Mill Road) for painting of bridge over Middle River, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through September 30.

*NEW* Route 250 (Hankey Mountain Highway) – Flagger and pilot truck traffic control between Route 715 (Braley Pond Road) and Highland County line for paving operations, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. September 8 to October 3.

Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 772 (Sulfur Pump Road) and Route 865 (Rockfish Road) for painting of bridge over Middle River, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through September 30.

*NEW* Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Eastbound and westbound left shoulder closures between I-81 interchange and Route 11 (Commerce Road/Lee Highway) for shoulder maintenance, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday.

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 238, northbound and southbound – Left shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 60 miles per hour. Traffic restrictions are for construction of I-81 truck-climbing lanes.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge and interchange project with completion expected in fall 2026.

*NEW* Exit 257, northbound – Shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Mile marker 263 to 264, northbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*NEW* Route 11 (North Liberty Street, Harrisonburg) – Southbound flagger traffic control between North Mason Street and East Grattan Street for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Single lane closures or travel-lane shifts as needed between MLK Jr. Way and Linda Lane/Burgess Road. Shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected completion in September 2026.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 620 (Mountain Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 722 (Armentrout Path) and Route 811 (Fridleys Gap Road) for replacement of bridge over Mountain Run, through September 30. Follow posted detour.

Route 644 (Resort Drive) – Closed between Silverstone Lane and Woodstone Drive for paving operations and turn-lane construction, through about October 31. Follow posted detour.

*NEW* Route 726 (Apple Valley Road) – Closed to through traffic between Westminster Way and Crownpoint Drive for pipe installation, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. September 8 – 19.

*NEW* Mile marker 268 to 270, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for bridge rehabilitation, 8 p.m. Monday night continuously through Wednesday night (September 8 – 11 and September 15 – 17). Includes closure of Exit 264 off-ramps. Follow posted detour.

Mile marker 268 to 269, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for maintenance to bridges over North Fork Shenandoah River, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of September 18. Northbound daytime shoulder closures, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.

Mile marker 290 to 286, southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through September 18.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 302 to 300, southbound – Overnight single lane closures southbound, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through November 6. Northbound and southbound shoulder closures 24/7. Traffic restrictions are related to I-81 widening project.

Mile marker 304 to 325, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for cable-barrier installation, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Thursday nights, 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights, 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday nights. Estimated completion December 31.

Mile marker 308 to 310, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for Opequon Creek bridge work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through Thursday.

Route 522 (North Frederick Pike) – Northbound right lane and shoulder closures at the Route 705 (Ebenezer Church Road) intersection for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 28.

*NEW* Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound single lane closures between Frederick County line and Route 660 (Honey Lane) for guardrail installation, 9 a.m. to 12 midnight Monday through Friday nights.

*NEW* Route 50 (John Mosby Highway) Eastbound and westbound right lane and shoulder closures between Route 622 (Swift Shoals Road) and Route 638 (Howellsville Road) for inspection of bridge over Shenandoah River, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 761 (Old Charles Town Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 666 (Gun Club Road) and Route 661 (Wadesville Road) for replacement of Opequon Creek bridge at Frederick County line. Expected completion in November 2025. Follow posted detour.

WARREN COUNTY

INTERSTATE 66

*UPDATE* Mile marker 2 to 0, westbound – Shoulder closures for road work related to I-81 southbound widening, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through November 7.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 11 to 15, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday.

Mile marker 11 to 12, eastbound and westbound – Right shoulder closures for bridge painting, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 28.

Route 340 (Stonewall Jackson Highway) – Flagger traffic control between Page County line and Route 674 (Limeton Church Road) for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through Friday.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 647 (Dismal Hollow Road) – Flagger traffic control near intersections with Route 603 (Oregon Hollow Road) and FR-285 (Gap Road) for painting of I-66 overpass bridge, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through September 28.

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Lane or shoulder closures as needed between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) during final stages of bridge and roadway work. Estimated completion September 2025.

Vegetation management may take place district wide on various routes. VDOT reminds motorists to use extreme caution when traveling through work zones.
