STAUNTON DISTRICT TRAFFIC ALERT

FOR JUNE 3 – 7, 2024

Highway Work Zones in the VDOT Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 38 to 13, westbound – Single lane closures for paving operations at several locations, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 3 – June 21.

PRIMARY ROADS

*UPDATE* Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs. Mobile traffic control for tractor mowing. Weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Route 220 (Sam Snead Highway) – Flagger and pilot truck traffic control between Route 622 (Robinson Lane) and Route 623 (Poor Farm Road) for paving operations, 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays through Friday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for brush cutting, pipe cleaning, tree removal, adding stone to unpaved roads and ditch work, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

AUGUSTA COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

Mile marker 87 to 100, eastbound – Mowing operations through 6 a.m. Saturday (June 8). Right shoulder closures during daytime, left shoulder closures at night.

*NEW* Mile Marker 94 to 93, westbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 95 to 98, eastbound and westbound – Overnight single lane and shoulder closures for sign installation work, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday nights.

INTERSTATE 81

*UPDATE* Mile marker 206 to 236, northbound and southbound – Overnight single lane closures for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through June 20.

Mile marker 214 to 210, southbound – Alternating lane closures for milling and paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through July 25. Exit 213 traffic will be detoured during ramp paving.

*NEW* Mile marker 221 to 205, southbound – Overnight left lane closures for mowing, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday nights.

*NEW* Mile marker 221 to 223, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for litter pickup operations, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight single-lane closures including along southbound Exit 221 ramp to eastbound I-64 for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through June 7. Overnight left lane closures from mile marker 226 and 221 for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through June 7. Following barrier placement, shoulder closures remain in place 24/7 through spring 2026. Work is related to I-81 widening project.

Mile marker 221 to 223, northbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for paving operations on bridges over I-81 ramp and railway, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through June 20.

Mile marker 225 to 227, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through June 27.

*NEW* Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Southbound right shoulder closures between Route 781 (Bald Rock Road) and Route 1930 (Rolla Mill Road) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

*UPDATE* Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) – Eastbound and westbound overnight alternating lane closures between I-81 interchange and Route 1427 (Rowe Road) for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday nights. Work is related to I-81 widening project.

Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 772 (Sulfur Pump Road) and Route 865 (Rockfish Road) for maintenance to bridge over Middle River, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through June 14.

*UPDATE* Route 610 (Howardsville Turnpike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 855 (Mill Creek Lane) and Route 623 (Back Creek Lane) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through June 13.

Route 619 (Purple Cow Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 340 (East Side Highway) and Route 611 (Calf Mountain Road/Dooms Crossing Road) for utility pole installation, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 2025.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025.

*NEW* Route 662 (Greenville School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 1205 (Main Street, Greenville) and Route 608 (Cold Springs Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 3 – June 13.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 30, 2025.

*NEW* Route 670 (Wagon Shop Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 675 (Callison Mill Road) and Route 674 (Pilson Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 3 – June 13.

Route 675/670/604 (Broadhead School Road/McClures Mill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 919 (Old Providence Road) and Route 675 (Callison Mill Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through June 27.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 240 to 239, southbound – Overnight single-lane closures for repairs and maintenance to North River bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Thursday.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2026. Overnight slow-roll closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 248 to 243, southbound – Right shoulder closures for staging equipment for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through June 21.

*NEW* Mile marker 260 to 253, southbound – Right and left shoulder closures in various locations for pipe work, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Eastbound and westbound right shoulder closures near Route 276/620 (Cross Keys Road/Indian Trial Road) intersection for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Overnight alternating eastbound and westbound closures between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and Terri Drive due to bridge work, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. nights through January 2026. Shoulder closures and travel-lane shifts 24/7. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Dry Run Road and Switzer Lake Road for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 30.

Route 259 (Lee Street/Brocks Gap Road) – Flagger traffic control between Broadway town limits and Route 1411 (Shenandoah Avenue) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. through June 28.

Route 340 (Lord Fairfax Highway) – Northbound and southbound overnight single lane closures between Berryville town limits and Route 658 (White Post Road) for pavement marker installations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nights through Monday (June 3).

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Estimated completion December 2025.

LYNCHBURG DISTRICT

TRAFFIC ALERT

June 3-9, 2024

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Highway work requiring road/lane/structure closures is planned;

however, work may be delayed/canceled due to weather or other issues. Items in

italics contain new/updated information. For up-to-date information, call 511 or visit

www.511Virginia.org.

District-wide activities:

Crews will perform various activities throughout the district to include, but are not limited

to bridge & guardrail maintenance, brush/tree/limb cutting, pothole/surface/shoulder work,

surface treatment/paving operations, work orders, mowing, boom axing, drainage repairs/

work and roadside cleanup.

Work at specific locations:

Amherst County:

Route 29 & Route 151 (Patrick Henry Hwy.) – Construction of a Restricted Crossing U-

Turn, storm drainage, advanced warning flashers, traffic lighting. The Route 608

(Toytown Rd.) crossover is closed for Phase One of construction. Estimated reopening of

crossover July 2024. Use caution and watch for changes in the traffic pattern during

construction. Estimated project completion November 2024.

Appomattox County:

Route 131 (Old Courthouse Rd.) from Route 460 BUS (Confederate Blvd.) to Route 460

Bypass (Richmond Highway) – Route 131 Reconstruction. Traffic shift in place. Lane

closures expected. Use caution. Estimated completion January, 2025.

Buckingham County:

Route 608 (Elcan Rd.) – Pipe replacement. Route 608 (Elcan Rd.) will be closed from

Route 636 (Francisco Rd.) to Route 635 (Buckingham Springs Rd.) from May 16, 2024 to

approximately May 30, 2024.

Route 460 (Richmond Highway) from Route 817 (Pleasant Valley Rd.) to Route 726 (Mt.

Athos Rd.) – Safety improvements. Shoulder widening, rumble strips, guardrail

replacement. Lane closures expected on weekend of June 8, 2024, weather permitting.

Use caution.

Charlotte County:

Route 664 (Butterwood Rd.) – pipe replacement. Detour in place. Expected completion

June 14, 2024.

Route 15 (Farmville Highway) at Route 15/360 BUS (Four Locust Highway) – Roundabout

project. Change in traffic pattern now in place allowing two-way movement along Route

15/360 BUS (Four Locust Highway) and a stop condition for Rte. 15 (Farmville Highway)

southbound traffic. The on-ramps from Route 15 to the Route 15/360 (Kings Highway) and

the off-ramp from Route 15/360 (Kings Highway) to Route 15 are closed to traffic.

Message boards and detour signage will alert motorists to the change and direct traffic

along the detour. Estimated overall project completion October 2024.

Cumberland County:

Route 45 (Cartersville Rd.) at Route 690 (Columbia Rd.) – Roundabout Project. Speed limit

has been reduced to 35 mph through the work zone. Expect changes in traffic patterns

beginning June 5, weather permitting, with grade changes along Rte. 45. Traffic will be

running on stone during this time and lane closures are expected. Use caution. Estimated

completion November 2024.

Halifax County:

Route 360 (James D. Hagood Highway) from Route 716 (Wolf Trap Rd.) to Route 344

(Scottsburg Rd.) – Safety improvements. Shoulder widening, rumble strips, guardrail

replacement. Lane closures expected. Use caution. Estimated completion November 2024.

Route 501 (L P Bailey Memorial Highway) at Route 628 (Chestnut Road) – Intersection

improvement project. Shoulder and lane closures expected. Temporary traffic signals in

place maintaining one lane of traffic along Route 501 and Route 628 until approximately the

end of August, 2024. Use caution. Estimated overall project completion December 2024.

Route 645 (State Shed Rd.) – Culvert repair – Route 645 is closed. Detour is in place.

Estimated completion May 31, 2024

Nelson County:

Route 29, between Route 6 (River Rd.) and Route 718 (Mountain Cove Rd.) – Shoulder

widening, rumble strip installation, guardrail installation. Work to begin March 18 and cause

alternating lane closures. Estimated completion January 2025.

Route 60 (Richmond Highway) over James River – Bridge deck replacement. Lane

closures and changes in traffic patterns in effect. Traffic is utilizing the other side of the

bridge to cross. Estimated completion July 2024.

closed to through traffic from May 29, 2024 to approximately June 7, 2024.

Route 656 (Kerns Church Rd.) – Culvert repairs. Beginning May 29, Route 656 will

be closed to through traffic from Route 712 (White Ridge Road), to the intersection of

Route 713 (Rock Springs Road). Estimated opening June 30, 2024.

Route 761 (Straightstone Rd.) – Bridge Replacement. Route 761 (Straightstone

Road) will be temporarily closed to through traffic from Route 604 (Glade Road), to

the intersection of Route 604 (Glade Road) from June 10, 2024 to approximately

August 8, 2024.

Prince Edward County:

Route 665 (Worsham Road) – Bridge Replacement. Route 665 (Worsham Road) is

closed to through traffic from Route 15 (Farmville Road) to the intersection of Route

630 (Redd Shop Road). A detour with signs is in effect, using Route 15 to Route

628 (Granite Falls Blvd.) to Route 630 (Oak Ridge Road) back to Route 665.

SCHEDULED CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE WORK

CULPEPER DISTRICT: June 3-7, 2024

CULPEPER — The following highway work is scheduled, weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the next week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones. (NEW) or(UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.

Albemarle County 

(NEW) New roadway construction – Expect land shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64, left lane and left shoulder closures between mile marker 102 and mile marker 103 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Route 1403 (Berkmar Drive), right lane and right shoulder closure between Route 1438 (Hilton Heights Road) and Route 1417 (Woodbrook Drive) in the southbound lanes, daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Roadway sweeping – Expect mobile, alternating lane closures, 3:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Long Street), between the Charlottesville City line and Route 1777 (Hansens Mountain Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday and Tuesday.

  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 122 and mile marker 125, alternating lane closures in the eastbound and westbound lanes, 8 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.
  • Interstate 64, alternating lane closures between mile marker 109 and mile marker 112 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, 8 p.m. Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Interstate 64, right shoulder closures between mile marker 110 and mile marker 111 in the westbound lanes, Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(UPDATE) Paving – Expect Lane closures in the following areas:

  • Route 649 (Proffit Road), mobile, alternating lane closures between Quarles Road and Route 830 (Colonial Drive) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday and Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Route 676 (Woodlands Road), alternating lane closures between Route 1548 Beau Mont Farm Road) and Route 1050 (Rivanwood Drive in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Bridge superstructure repairs/replacement – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • Route 20 (Scottsville Road), temporary traffic signal with new traffic pattern at Route 708 (Red Hill Road). Route 708 is narrowed to one lane for construction on the bridge over the North Fork Hardware River in the southbound lanes. Please expect delays during high volume times of the day. Project completion date, Dec. 4, 2024.
  • Route 671 (Davis Shop Road), road closed between Route 601 (Free Union Road) and Route 664 (Markwood Road). Please follow signed detour around the work area. Crews are replacing part of the bridge. Project completion date is June 7.

Bridge repairs – Expect alternating lane closures, daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the following areas:

  • Route 637 (Dick Woods Road), between Rock Mills Road and Route 177 (Langford Drive) in the eastbound and westbound lanes.
  • Route 691 (Greenwood Road), between U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 690 (Greenwood Station Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes.
  • Route 744 (Hacktown Road), between U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) and Route 731 (Keswick Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail), right lane and right shoulder closures between Route 633 (Heards Mountain Road) and Route 699 (Boaz Road), daily, starting Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike), alternating lane closures between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and Route 797 (Hillsboro Lane) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Route 240 (Three Notch’d Road), alternating lane closures between Route 240 (Crozet Avenue) and U.S. 250 (Ivy Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

New Roadway Construction – Construction of a roundabout at Route 743 (Hydraulic Road) and Hillsdale Drive. Expect lane and shoulder closures with flaggers in the following areas nightly, Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, through May 5.

  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street North) and Brandywine Drive, nightly in the southbound lanes.
  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street North) and Cedar Hill Road in the northbound and southbound lanes.

(UPDATE) Interstate 64 – Other construction. Expect lane and shoulder closures between mile marker 102 and mile marker 107 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Interstate 64 – Bridge painting. Expect left lane and left shoulder closures between mile marker 128 and mile marker 130 in the eastbound lanes 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1 to 10 a.m. Sunday.

Route 620 (Rolling Road – Tree trimming. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 795 (Presidents Road) and the Fluvanna County line in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, through Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 641 (Frays Mill Road) – Other bridge work. Road closed at Route 743 (Advance Mills Road) for replacement of bridge over Marsh Run. Drivers on U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) who need to access Route 743 north and west of the closure should use Route 607 (Cedar Grove Road). Expected completion date, Dec. 5, 2024.

(NEW) Route 676 (Woodlands Road) – Line painting. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 1050 (Rivanwood Drive) and Route 1548 (Beau Mont Farm Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Route 797 (Hillsboro Lane) – Rehabilitation project. Expect alternating lane closures between Route 684 (Half Mile Branch Road) and U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

(NEW) U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) – Signal installation. Expect right shoulder closures at Route 1417 (Woodbrook Drive) in the southbound lanes, Monday and Tuesday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City of Charlottesville

(NEW) Route 685 (Chestnut Fork Road) – Turn lane construction. Expect alternating lanes closures between Route 229 (Rixeyville Road) and Route 761 (Ridgelea Avenue) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fauquier County

Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

(UPDATE) Interstate 66 – Bridge deck repairs. Expect alternating lane closures between mile marker 31 and mile marker 33. The exit ramp to Route 245 (Old Tavern Road) will be closed in the westbound lanes. Please use caution through the work zone and expect delays. Use alternate routes if possible. Sunday through Saturday, 9 p.m. to 1 p.m.

(UPDATE) Interstate 66 – Tree trimming. Expect right shoulder closures between mile marker 18 and mile marker 21 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
