Highway Work Zones in the VDOT Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

ALLEGHANY COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*NEW* Mile marker 0 to 41, eastbound and westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for vegetation management, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on nights Monday through Thursday.

Mile marker 35 to 41, eastbound – Alternating lane closures for paving operations, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. through May 31.

PRIMARY ROADS

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for tree and debris removal, drainage work, pothole patching, brush cutting, ditching and shoulder repairs, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

INTERSTATE 81

*NEW* Mile marker 174 to 205, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for vegetation management, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on nights Monday through Thursday.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 174 to 188, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures for ditch cleaning operations, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 60 (East Midland Trail) – Eastbound alternating lane closures between southbound I-81 on-ramp and Route 699 (Wesley Chapel Road) for overhead sign repairs, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting. Mobile lane closures for mowing, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 712 (Wades Road) – Road closed to through traffic between Route 726 (McElwee Road) and Route 729 (Back Draft Road) for replacement of bridge over Cedar Grove Branch, through May 16. Follow posted detour.

Various roads – Flagger traffic control for grading, pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, pavement patching, shoulder repairs and brush cutting. Mobile lane closures for mowing, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

HIGHLAND COUNTY

INTERSTATE 64

*UPDATE* Mile marker 87 to 96, eastbound and westbound – Shoulder closures for pipe repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

*NEW* Mile marker 90 to 88, westbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for overhead sign repairs, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. Wednesday night.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 95 to 96, eastbound – Right shoulder closures for sign installation work, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

INTERSTATE 81

*UPDATE* Mile marker 205 to 214, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures for pipe work and shoulder repairs, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

*NEW* Mile marker 214 to 213, southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for maintenance to bridge over Route 11, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Thursday night.

Mile marker 214 to 210, southbound – Alternating lane closures for milling and paving operations, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through July 25. Exit 213 traffic will be detoured during ramp paving.

Mile marker 220 to 222, northbound and southbound – Left and right shoulder closures for bridge work, 24/7 through September 30.

Mile marker 219 to 223, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures for bridge maintenance, 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. through night of May 9.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 221 to 226, northbound and southbound – Overnight left lane closures for installation of concrete barriers, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. nights through May 10. Following barrier placement, left shoulder closures remain in place 24/7 through spring 2026. Work is related to I-81 widening project.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 11 (Lee Highway) – Northbound right lane closures between Route 940 (Dick Huff Lane) and Staunton city limits for sidewalk installation, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through May 24.

Route 262 (Woodrow Wilson Parkway) – Eastbound and westbound left shoulder closures due to widening project in the area of the Route 252 (Middlebrook Avenue) interchange, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. through May 25.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 612 (Laurel Hill Road) – Westbound right lane and shoulder closures between Route 818 (Dunsmore Road) and Route 1906 (Lodge Lane) for milling at various entrances, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through May 27. Work related to Verona pedestrian improvement project.

Route 624 (South Delphine Avenue, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between South Oak Lane and Chinquapin Drive for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through May 30, 2025.

Route 635 (Barterbrook Road) – Closed between I-81 frontage roads (FR-217 and FR-218) for bridge replacement as part of I-81 southbound auxiliary lane project. Follow posted detour. Expected completion summer 2025.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through June 30, 2025.

Route 675 (Broadhead School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 11 (Lee Jackson Highway) and Route 604 (McClures Mill Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.

Route 707 (Trimbles Mill Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 806 (Boy Scout Lane) and Route 713 (Shuey Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. through Thursday.

Route 708 (Glebe School Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 711 (Miller Farm Road) and Route 710 (Eidson Creek Road) for maintenance to bridge over Eidson Creek, through May 16. Follow posted detour.

*UPDATE* Route 876 (Glebe School Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 713 (Shuey Road) and Route 602 (Summerdean Road) for utility work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 16.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for drainage work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 263, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures in various locations for drainage work, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday.

Mile marker 242 to 248, northbound and southbound – Overnight alternating lane closures as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2026. Overnight slow-roll closures as needed, 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project.

Mile marker 244 to 249, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for rock and soil testing, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 33 (Spotswood Trail) – Eastbound and westbound alternating lane closures near Elkton town limits for maintenance to bridge over Route 340, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday.

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) –Eastbound and westbound alternating lane closures and traffic lane shifts between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and University Boulevard for bridge and roadway work. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement through fall 2026.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger and pilot-truck traffic control between Dry Run Road and Switzer Lake Road for road widening project, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. through August 30.

Route 259 (Lee Street/Brocks Gap Road) – Flagger traffic control between Broadway town limits and Route 1411 (Shenandoah Avenue) for utility work, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. through June 28.

Various roads – Mobile traffic control for mowing operations. Flagger traffic control for pipe replacement, ditch work, tree removal, shoulder repairs, pavement patching and brush cutting, 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

SECONDARY ROADS

Route 604 (Loop Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 609 (Naked Creek Road) and Route 750 (Kemble Spring Lane, Page County) for replacement of bridge over Naked Creek, through June 7. Follow posted detour.

Mile marker 298 to 264, southbound – Right shoulder closures for ditch cleaning operations, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Mile marker 296 to 299, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures including along Exit 298 off-ramp for utility installation, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through June 3.

PRIMARY ROADS

*NEW* Route 11 (Main Street, Woodstock) – Southbound right shoulder closures between Woodstock town limits and Route 605 (Hoover Road) for sign work, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) – Right shoulder closures along on-ramp to southbound I-81 at exit 298 for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through Friday.

Route 55 (John Marshall Highway) – Westbound right shoulder closures in the area of I-81 at exit 296 for utility work, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. through June 3.

FREDERICK COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 300 to 301, northbound and southbound – Overnight lane closures and traffic-lane shifts as needed, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through December 2024. Shoulder closures 24/7. Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Work is related to southbound acceleration ramp extension and bridge widening with estimated completion in late 2024.

*UPDATE* Mile marker 302 to 313, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for shoulder repairs and brush removal, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Saturday.

Route 658 (Rockland Road) – Closed to through traffic between Route 340/522 (Winchester Road) and Route 705 (Fishnet Boulevard) for construction of bridge over Norfolk Southern Railway. Estimated completion December 2025.

CULPEPER DISTRICT: April 29-May 3, 2024

CULPEPER — The following highway work is scheduled, weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the next week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones. (NEW) or(UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.

Albemarle County 

(NEW) Bridge superstructure repairs/replacement – Expect lane and should closures in the following areas:

  • Route 20 (Scottsville Road), temporary traffic signal with new traffic pattern at Route 708 (Red Hill Road). Route 708 is narrowed to one lane for construction on the bridge over the North Fork Hardware River in the southbound lanes. Drivers can also expect lane closures up to 10 minutes May 1 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for steel beam setting. Please expect delays and backups. Project completion date, Dec. 2024.
  • Route 671 (Davis Shop Road), road closed between Route 601 (Free Union Road) and Route 664 (Markwood Road) starting Monday. Please follow signed detour around the work area. Crews are replacing part of the bridge. Project completion date is June 7.

(NEW) Paving – Expect mobile, alternating lane closures in the following areas:

  • Route 643 (Polo Grounds Road) between Route 1033 (Bentivar Drive) and Route 649 (Proffit Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, through Monday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • Route 712 (Plank Road), between Route 717 (Secretarys Sand Road) and Route 715 (Esmont Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

(NEW) Vegetation control – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64, right shoulder closure between mile marker 120 and mile marker 125 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, daily, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Interstate 64, alternating lane closures between mile marker 114 and mile marker 115 in the westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(NEW) Other bridge work – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • Route 626 (James River Road), temporary traffic pauses for up to 15 minutes at a time at Route 735 (Mount Alto Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Thursday, noon to 6 p.m.
  • Route 641 (Frays Mill Road), Road closed at Route 743 (Advance Mills Road) for replacement of bridge over Marsh Run. Drivers on U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) who need to access Route 743 north and west of the closure should use Route 607 (Cedar Grove Road). Expected completion date, Dec. 5, 2024.

(UPDATE) Other construction – Expect right shoulder closures Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the following areas:

  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 102 and mile marker 103 in the eastbound lanes
  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 106 and mile marker 107 in the westbound lanes.
  • Interstate 64, between mile marker 104 and mile marker 105 in the westbound lanes.

New Roadway Construction – Construction of a roundabout at Route 743 (Hydraulic Road) and Hillsdale Drive. Expect lane and shoulder closures with flaggers in the following areas nightly, Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, through May 5.

  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street North) and Brandywine Drive, nightly in the southbound lanes.
  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street North) and Cedar Hill Road in the northbound and southbound lanes.

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Fence repairs. Expect right shoulder closures between mile marker 115 and mile marker 117 in the westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Ditch cleaning. Expect mobile work zone with right shoulder closures between mile marker 100 and mile marker 124 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 64 – Brush removal. Expect alternating lane closures between mile marker 124 and mile marker 131 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Equipment installation. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between mile marker 109 and mile marker 99 (Nelson County) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Thursday through Tuesday, May 7, 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.

(NEW) U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail) – Super load. Expect slow-moving vehicles between Interstate 64, Exit 118A (Lynchburg) and Route 708 (Boxwood Farm Road) in Amherst County, Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

(NEW) U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) – Guardrail repairs. Expect left lane and left shoulder closures between Route 1510 (Camelot Drive) and Route 1575 (Austin Drive) in the northbound lanes, Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(NEW) U.S. 29 (29 Bypass) – Survey work. Expect both shoulders and both ramps closed between the ramp to and from U.S. Business 29 (Fontaine Avenue Extended) and the ramp to and from U.S. 29 (29 Bypass) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Route 631 (Rio Road East) – Roadway sweeping. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between the Charlottesville City line and U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Friday, 3:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

(NEW) Route 676 (Woodlands Road) – Bridge repairs. Expect alternating lane closures with flaggers between Route 743 (Earlysville Road) and Route 1050 (Rivanwood Drive) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City of Charlottesville

Road improvements — Expect lane and shoulder closures with flaggers Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., 10 p.m. Friday to 9 a.m. Saturday, 9 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday, 8 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, nightly in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Bypass Expressway), between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street North) and Dairy Road in the eastbound and westbound lanes.
  • Route 743 (Hydraulic Road), between U.S. 29 (Emmet Street North) and Brandywine Drive in the northbound and southbound lanes.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Highway work requiring road/lane/structure closures is planned;

however, work may be delayed/canceled due to weather or other issues. Items in

Crews will perform various activities throughout the district to include, but are not

limited to bridge & guardrail maintenance, brush/tree/limb cutting, pothole/surface/

Amherst County:

Route 29 & Route 151 (Patrick Henry Hwy.) – Construction of a Restricted Crossing U-

Route 15 (Farmville Highway) at Route 15/360 BUS (Four Locust Highway) –

Roundabout project. Change in traffic pattern now in place allowing two-way

movement along Route 15/360 BUS (Four Locust Highway) and a stop condition for

Rte. 15 (Farmville Highway) southbound traffic. The on-ramps from Route 15 to the

Route 15/360 (Kings Highway) and the off-ramp from Route 15/360 (Kings Highway) to

Route 15 are closed to traffic. Message boards and detour signage will alert motorists

to the change and direct traffic along the detour. Estimated overall project completion

October 2024.

Route 45 (Cartersville Rd.) at Route 690 (Columbia Rd.) – Roundabout Project. Speed

limit has been reduced to 35 mph through the work zone. Shoulder and lane closures

Route 501 (L P Bailey Memorial Highway) at Route 628 (Chestnut Road) – Intersection

Route 645 (State Shed Rd.) – Culvert repair – Route 645 is closed. Detour is in place.
