I-64 Near The 102 MM

We broke this story in this post (click here) on Wednesday evening. A man was in a standoff with police in the middle of I-64 eastbound after a pursuit out of Waynesboro.
Thursday afternoon VSP released the name of the suspect and said he eventually died at UVA in Charlottesville.

“The investigation, by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office, continues into the officer-involved shooting that took place on Interstate 64 in Albemarle County Wednesday (April 10, 2024).
According to Waynesboro Police, they received an emergency call for a reported shooting in the 1000 block of Hopeman Parkway in the city shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. As officers were responding to the scene, they observed the suspect’s vehicle leaving the scene. As officers continued to respond to the shooting scene, other officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle. However, the vehicle did not stop, and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued over Afton Mountain into Albemarle County. At approximately 5:38 p.m., the pursuit ended when the vehicle ran off the side of the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 102 mile marker and crashed into the guardrail. During a continued engagement with the suspect, shots were fired. The suspect, Kevin D. Taylor II, 29, of Charlottesville, Va., was transported to UVA Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries later Wednesday night.
No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. A firearm was recovered at the scene.
At the request of the Waynesboro Police Chief, state police is investigating the officer-involved shooting. Once state police completes its investigation, the investigative findings will be turned over to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for final review and adjudication.
