TRAFFIC ALERT

October 16-22, 2023

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Highway work requiring road/lane/structure closures is planned;

however, work may be delayed/canceled due to weather or other issues. Items in

italics contain new/updated information. For up-to-date information, call 511 or visit

www.511Virginia.org.

District-wide activities:

Crews will perform various activities throughout the district to include, but are not limited to

bridge & guardrail maintenance, brush/tree/limb cutting, pothole/surface/shoulder work,

surface treatment/paving operations, work orders, mowing, boom axing, drainage repairs/

work and roadside cleanup.

Appomattox County:

Route 131 (Old Courthouse Rd.) from Route 460 BUS (Confederate Blvd.) to Route 460

Bypass (Richmond Highway) – Route 131 Reconstruction. Shoulder and lane closures

expected. Traffic shift beginning July 12. Use caution. Estimated completion October,

2024.

Route 460 East and Route 460 West between Pleasent Valley Road and Mt. Athos Road –

Pipe Replacements. Temporary lane closures during weekends (7 p.m. Friday – 6 a.m.

Monday) to begin in October. Message boards will be placed in advance of specific

weekends as the work progresses. Estimated Completion April 1, 2024.

Charlotte County:

Route 15 (Farmville Highway) at Route 15/360 BUS (Four Locust Highway) -Roundabout

project. Change in traffic pattern now in place allowing two-way movement along Route

15/360 BUS (Four Locust Highway) and a stop condition for Rte. 15 (Farmville Highway)

southbound traffic. The on-ramps from Route 15 to the Route 15/360 (Kings Highway) and

the off-ramp from Route 15/360 (Kings Highway) to Route 15 are closed to traffic.

Message boards and detour signage will alert motorists to the change and direct traffic

along the detour. Estimated overall project completion October 2024.

Cumberland County:

Route 45 (Cartersville Rd.) at connection with Route 616 (Deep Run Rd.) and Route 684

(Cartersville Extension) – Intersection converted to four-way stop condition on September

21. Message boards will alert motorists of the change. Use caution.

Halifax County:

Route 610 from Route 641 (Lower Liberty Road to Route 626 (Howard P. Anderson Road)

– Bridge Replacement. Route 610 (Crystal Hill Road) will be temporarily closed to through

traffic from Route 641 (Lower Liberty Road), to the intersection of Route 626 (Howard P.

Anderson Road). This section of Route 610 will be closed from

9/11/2023 to approximately 12/15/2023. A detour with proper signage will be in place.

Route 360 (James D. Hagood Highway) from Route 607 (Rodgers Chapel Rd.) to Route

92 (Clover Rd.) – Safety improvements: Shoulder widening, Rumble strips, Guardrail

replacement. Lane closures expected. Estimated completion November 2023.

Route 640 (Buffalo Road) near Route 639 (Rock Barn Road) – Bridge replacement. Detour

in place. Estimated completion December 2023.

Nelson County:

Route 29 North between Route 665 (Old Rose Mill Road) and Nelson County/ Albemarle

County line – Milling and paving work. Watch for lane closures and work zones.

Route 60 over James River – Bridge Deck replacement. Lane closures and changes in

traffic patterns. Beginning first of October, stage two. Traffic will utilize the other side of the

bridge to cross. Est. comp. end of July 2024.

Route 622 (Cascade Road) Bridge Replacement – Motorists should expect delays due to a

bridge replacement on Route 622 (Cascade Rd.) in Pittsylvania County beginning October

16 and lasting until approximately December 1, 2023, weather permitting. The Department

of Transportation will provide adequate signs for the closure and detour of this portion of

Route 622 (Cascade Rd.) and will use Route 856 (Cobbs Knob Rd.) to Route 621 (Loblolly

Dr.) crossing into Henry County, to Route 610 (Axton Rd.) and back to Route 622

(Cascade Rd.) crossing back into Pittsylvania County.

STAUNTON DISTRICT TRAFFIC ALERT

FOR OCTOBER 16 – 20, 2023

Highway Work Zones in the VDOT Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

Route 679 (Hops Hill Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control near Route 11 intersection (Lee Highway) for maintenance of I-81 overpass bridge, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of October 30.  Route 692 (Cedar Creek Road) – Overnight flagger traffic control near Route 609 intersections (Red Mill Road) for maintenance of I-81 overpass bridge, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. through night of October 30.

Route 664 (Lyndhurst Road, Waynesboro) – Shoulder closures between Miami Avenue and Purdue Street for work related to construction of Waynesboro Southern Corridor, through October 30.

Route 664 (Mount Torrey Road) – Shoulder closures and occasional flagger traffic control between Route 624 (Lyndhurst Road) and Route 894 (Mount Torrey Road) for water line installation, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 31.

Route 694 (Mount Tabor Road) – Flagger traffic control between Route 252 (Middlebrook Road) and Route 700 (Bowman Springs Road/Shirey Road) for utility work, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY

INTERSTATE 81

Mile marker 237 to 263, northbound and southbound – Shoulder closures for cleaning of drainage structures and pipe maintenance, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. through October 20.

Mile marker 240 to 257, northbound and southbound – Overnight slow-roll traffic control as needed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Expect delays. During slow-roll operations, temporary on-ramp closures possible at exits 240, 243, 245, 247, 251 and 257. Overnight alternating lane closures, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through September 2024. Traffic restrictions are related to Route 33 bridge and interchange project and Route 720 bridge replacement.

Mile marker 242 to 249, northbound – Overnight single lane closures for pavement marking, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through Saturday night (October 21).

*UPDATE* Exit 243, northbound – Shoulder closures along ramps for tree trimming operations, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

*NEW* Mile Marker 243 to 248, northbound and southbound – Right shoulder closures for rock and soil testing, including partial closures of northbound Exit 243 and southbound Exit 247 off-ramps as needed for loading and unloading equipment, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – 24/7 shoulder closures and traffic lane shifts between Vine Street/Hawkins Street and University Boulevard for bridge and roadway work. Single lane closures as needed. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour with automated speed enforcement. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvement with expected project completion in fall of 2026.

Route 259 (West Lee Street, Broadway) – Traffic using temporary Linville Creek bridge between Route 42 (Main Street) and Route 1411 (Shenandoah Avenue). Traffic scheduled to begin using new permanent bridge on Thursday, October 12. Work zone speed limit will remain 25 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for bridge replacementwith estimated project completion in November 2023.

*NEW* Various roads – Overnight flagger traffic control at various intersections on Routes 11, 42, 257 and 331 for traffic signal inspections, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday nights (October 15-18).

Work zone speed limit 55 miles an hour. Work is related to southbound acceleration ramp extension and bridge widening with estimated completion in fall 2024.

Route 7 (Harry Byrd Highway) – Eastbound and westbound single lane closures between Route 606 (River Road) and Route 7 Business just east of Berryville for shoulder widening and rumble strip installation. Eastbound lane closures 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. weekdays. Westbound lane closures between 8 p.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays or weeknights. Estimated completion December 2023.

INTERSTATE 66

*NEW* Exit 6, westbound – Overnight partial closures of off-ramp to Route 340/522 for paving operations, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the nights of October 15 to November 17.

Route 645 (Magnolia Road) – Pipe repairs/installation. Expect road closure between U.S. 33 (Spotswood Trail) and the Albemarle County line. Please follow signed detour around the work zone. Expected completion, Oct. 20.
