LYNCHBURG DISTRICT TRAFFIC ALERT February 20-26, 2023

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Highway work requiring road/lane/structure closures is planned; however, work may be delayed/canceled due to weather or other issues. Items in italics contain new/updated information. For up-to-date information, call 511 or visit www.511Virginia.org. District-wide activities: Crews will perform various activities throughout the district to include, but are not limited to bridge & guardrail maintenance, brush/tree/limb cutting, pothole/surface/shoulder work, surface treatment operations, work orders, mowing, boom axing, drainage repairs/work and roadside cleanup.Work at specific locations:

Amherst County: Please note district-wide activities above.

Appomattox County: Please note district-wide activities above. Bedford County:Route 221 (Forest Rd.) intersections Route 1425 Graves Mill and Route 1426 Gristmill Rd. Lane closures and changes in traffic pattern are likely. Expect lane closures on Rte. 221. Also, between the hours of 9 p.m. 6 a.m., Graves Mill will be closed between Rte. 221 and Gristmill Rd. Traffic will be detoured through Gristmill Rd. Signing, Barricades, Flaggers and Police will be in place to direct traffic. Started May 1 2022 and est. comp. May 18, 2023.Please note district-wide activities above.

Buckingham County: Route 602 over the James River – Bridge Painting. Temporary traffic signals will be utilized to control traffic beginning on January 16, 2023 and will be in operation until late February 2023 on Route 626 and its connection with Route 602. Route 671 over Slate River, just east of Route 611 (Diana Mill Road) – Bridge Painting. Lane Closures. Temporary traffic signals will be utilized to control traffic beginning on January 30 and will be in operation until late February 2023. Please note district-wide activities above.

Campbell County: Route 29 N over NSRR, near airport –Bridge and approach work; est. comp. May 2023. Route 29B Timberlake Road intersection Route 622 Waterlick Road – Safety improvement project lane closures changes in traffic pattern are likely Starting May 1. Estimated completion May 12, 2023. Crews will be working in the median on Timberlake Road between Tomahawk Drive and Homewood Drive. Signs and Flaggers will be in place to direct traffic. Please note district-wide activities above.

Charlotte County: Please note district-wide activities above. Cumberland County: Please note district-wide activities above.

Halifax County: Routes 501 & 610 – Passing lane project. Lane closures and shoulder closures will continue as needed with work along the shoulders. Fixed completion- May 5, 2023. Route 733 – Bridge replacement project. Route 733 (East Hitesburg Rd.) will be closed to thru traffic between Route 602 (Hitesburg Church Rd.) and Route 734 (Red Banks Rd.) from January 30, 2023 through May 5, 2023. VDOT will provide adequate signs for the closure and detour during the closure. The detour will use Route 602 (Hitesburg Church Rd.) to Route 734 (Red Banks Rd.) back to Route 733 (East Hitesburg Rd.) Please note district-wide activities above.

Lynchburg: Route 29/460 (Campbell Ave–Concord Turnpike) – Bridge replacement. Northbound 29/ eastbound and westbound 460 speed limit 45 mph. Lane closures changes in traffic pattern are likely. Completion July 31, 2023. **On Thursday, Feb. 23, beginning at 7 p.m. and going overnight, expect delays due to girder erection. The west/south right lane will be closed. Please note district-wide activities above.

Nelson County: Route 60 over James River – Bridge Deck replacement. Lane closures and changes in traffic patterns rescheduled and began the week of June 6. Est. comp July 14, 2024. Route 626 over Tye River – Bridge Painting. Lane closures with flagging operations will occur daily beginning January 23, 2023 and lasting until mid-February 2023 at the connection of Route 626 (Norwood Rd.) and Route 655 (Variety Mills Rd.) Route 723 (Old Roseland Road) – Culvert Replacement. Route 723 (Old Roseland Road) will be closed to thru traffic from Route 151 (Patrick Henry Highway) to the intersection of Route 655 (Roseland Road) from February 13, 2023 to approximately April 7, 2023. A detour will be in place with signage. The detour will utilize Route 151 (Patrick Henry Highway) to Route 655 (Roseland Road) back to Route 723 (Old Roseland Road). Please note district-wide activities above.

Pittsylvania County: Route 29 at Bannister River – Road closure for bridgework. Motorists should expect delays on Route 29 at the Bannister River in the Tightsqueeze area of Pittsylvania County. The northbound bridge will close for repair and both north and south traffic will cross the southbound bridge. Bridgework began April 4, 2022 and is continuing until approximately August of 2023. SCHEDULED CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE WORK

CULPEPER DISTRICT: Feb. 20-24, 2023

CULPEPER — The following highway work is scheduled, weather permitting, in the Culpeper District during the next week. Traffic movements may be restricted and speed limits reduced in work zones. (NEW) or (UPDATE) indicate revisions since last week’s report.

Albemarle County

(UPDATE) Albemarle Design-Build Projects – Be alert for construction activities in the following areas:

  • U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) at Interstate 64. Construction of diverging diamond interchange. Speed limit is reduced to 25 miles per hour. Expect shoulder closures, and stay alert for crews through the work zone.

  • U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) at Route 151 (Critzer Shop Road). New roundabout. Be alert for equipment and workers near the travel lanes. Speed limit is reduced to 25 miles per hour. Expected completion date is Feb., 2023. Expect flagging operations Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the following areas:

    • U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) between Route 172 (Little Rock Lane) and Route 692 (Plank Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes.

    • Route 151 (Critzer Shop Road) between U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 803 (Goodloe Lane), in the northbound and southbound lanes.

(UPDATE) Utility work under VDOT permit – Expect lane and shoulder closures in the following areas:

  • U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail), right lane closure between Route 854 (Carrsbrook Drive) and Ridgewood Drive in the northbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

  • Route 1403 (Berkmar Drive) will be closed between Route 1438 (Hilton Heights Road) and Route 631 (Rio Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily.

Interstate 64 – Brush removal. Expect left lane and left shoulder closures between mile marker 123 and mile marker 124, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

U.S. 29 (Monacan Trail) — Pipe repairs/installation. Expect left lane closures between Route 804 (Thackers Lane) and Route 633 (Cove Garden Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 22 (Louisa Road) – Shoulder repairs. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) and Route 231 (Gordonsville Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

(NEW) Route 231 (Gordonsville Road) – Debris pick-up. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 22 (Louisa Road) and the Louisa County line in the northbound and southbound lanes, Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

City of Charlottesville

(UPDATE) Interstate 64 — Tree removal operations. Expect right shoulder closures between mile marker 124 and mile marker 142 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Culpeper County

U.S. 522 (Sperryville Pike) – Other construction. Expect alternating lane closures with flaggers between Virginia Avenue and Aspen Street in the northbound and southbound lanes, daily, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fauquier County

(NEW) Interstate 66 – Ditch cleaning operations. Expect alternating lane closures between mile marker 15 and mile marker 33 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Interstate 66 – Bridge deck repairs. Expect alternating lane closures between mile marker 29 and mile marker 32 in the westbound lanes, daily, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

U.S. 17 (Marsh Road) – Tree trimming operations. Expect right lane closures between Route 651 (Sumerduck Road) and Route 653 (Morgansburg Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) Route 610 (Aquia Road) – Utility work under VDOT permit. Expect lane closures between Route 846 and Route 848 (Tower Hill Road) in the eastbound lanes, daily, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Greene County

U.S. 33 (Spotswood Trail) — Road reconstruction. Both shoulders are closed between Route 680 (Pinewood Court) and U.S. 29 (Seminole Trail) in the eastbound and westbound lanes while crews work behind barrels. Traffic is diverted onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes while crews reconstruct the westbound lanes. Drivers should use caution through the work zone and stay alert for construction vehicles entering and exiting the roadway daily. Expected completion is summer 2023.

Route 645 (Moore Road) – Drainage installation. Expect road closures at U.S. 33 (Spotswood Trail) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Louisa County

(NEW) Interstate 64 – Shoulder repairs. Expect shoulder closures between mile marker 132 and mile marker 146 in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

(NEW) U.S. 33 (East Main Street) – Ditch cleaning operations. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures with flaggers, between Route 208 (West Main Street) and U.S. 522 (Cross County Road in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Tuesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

(NEW) Route 652 (Kentucky Springs Road) – Bridge deck repairs. Expect lane and shoulder closures at Route 1064 (Randolph Street) in the southbound lanes, Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Madison County

(NEW) Route 230 (Orange Road) – Debris pick-up. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 607 (Elly Road) and Route 691 (Lost Mountain Road) in the eastbound and westbound lanes, Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

(NEW) Route 230 (Wolftown-Hood Road) – Driveway pipe installation. Expect lane and shoulder closures between Route 661 (Trinity Lane) and Route 662 (Graves Mill Road) in the eastbound lanes, Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

(UPDATE) Route 231 (South F T Valley Road) – Ditch cleaning operations. Expect mobile, alternating lane closures between Route 670 (Old Blue Ridge Turnpike) and Route 642 (Duet Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Thursday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Rappahannock County

(NEW) U.S. 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway) – Brush removal. Expect alternating lane closures with flaggers, between Route 662 (Little Long Mountain Road) and Route 610 (Chester Gap Road) in the northbound and southbound lanes, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

STAUNTON DISTRICT TRAFFIC ALERT FOR FEBRUARY 20 – 24, 2023

Highway Work Zones in the VDOT Staunton District

STAUNTON – The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

During slow-roll operations, be alert for temporary on-ramp closures at exits 240, 243, 245, 247, 251 and 257. Northbound exit 247 on-ramp closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Detour posted. Northbound and southbound overnight lane closures for bridge demolition work, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. through night of March 30. Work is related to Route 720 overpass bridge replacement.

PRIMARY ROADS

Route 33 (East Market Street, Harrisonburg) – Eastbound and westbound alternating lane closures between Burgess Road and MLK Jr. Way for shoulder widening, drainage work and barrier installation, Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Be alert for travel-lane shifts in both directions. Work zone speed limit 25 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for Route 33 bridge replacements and interchange improvementproject.

Route 33 (Rawley Pike) – Flagger traffic control between Route 847 (Rawley Springs Road) and West Virginia line for shoulder repairs, ditch and pipe work, brush and tree cutting. Weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through May 1.

Route 259 (West Lee Street, Broadway) – Traffic uses temporary bridge between Route 42 (Main Street) and Route 1411 (Shenandoah Avenue). Work Zone speed limit 25 miles an hour. Traffic restrictions are for Linville Creek bridge replacement.Estimated project completion November 2023.
