Lovingston
Nelson County, Virginia
Very often it’s hard to get anyone locally with the right expertise to fix a refrigeration unit in the brewing industry here in Nelson. Or find a welder with the right skills to help manufacture something in one of the many vineyards, breweries, cideries, or distilleries. East Nelson Board of Supervisor Jesse Rutherford went on a mission to bring a program to the county that will actually train people here in those trade fields. The program will also train students on how to grow food used in the food and beverage / agri business. It will be a satellite arm of PVCC on site at food and beverage locations in Nelson.
“It’s a great start in the right direction. This will help stop having to import workers into Nelson to fill jobs that would otherwise might have to come from other parts of the world. Some of the skilled tradespeople have come from as far away as France to work on the equipment here,” Rutherford tells us.
Above, just a few of the many letters of local support for the program from various hospitality organizations and vineyard / brewing operations.
Once the final details are completed students involved in the satellite classes will be able to work and train at specific faciltites in Nelson to learn the skills needed in the industry.
Two specific Nelson operations will be participating in the joint venture with PVCC. Additional details on those plans will be revealed soon.
