Years ago Wintergreen Fire Chief Curtis Sheets knew there was a looming problem with increased fire potential for people living on a mountain with heavily wooded areas nearby. “Over the last few years we have worked hard to become a safer Firewise Community. Some of the efforts have been assisted through grant dollars,” Chief Sheets tells NCL. Tuesday afternoon representatives from the Virginia Department of Forestry visited Wintergreen to see firsthand the progress that’s been made.

Chief Sheets (center seen through the windshield of an all terrain vehicle) talks to VDOF about the strides made over the past 7-8 years in cleaning up areas to make them safer.

WFD received a grant in excess of $20,000 to help get make the homes and surrounding mountain areas safer in the event of a fire. Much of the emphasis was on landscaping, routine maintenance and cleaning around homes to keep them from being fire prone.
