Nelson County, Virginia
By 3PM all of the rain in the valley portions of Nelson had turned to heavy snow. Earlier in the day people living here were surprised by thunder snow accompanied with heavy sleet. Though temps hovered just above freezing at 33° around 4PM, the snow was falling so fat it was accumulating on both highways and the ground. Up at Wintergreen temps have been below freezing all day with lots of ice accumulation early in the day. That along with lightning from thunderstorms eventually prompted the resort to close at 3PM Wednesday afternoon.
Since temperatures stayed just above freezing for much of the day Wednesday in the valley, it’s highly likely that accumulation predictions will fall short of warning levels.
Regardless, numerous widespread accidents have been occurring in both Nelson and along I-64.
As of this post a Winter Storm Warning continues until 4AM Thursday morning.
