Just days beyond the three year mark of the traffic deaths of Laura Cavedo and her daughters, Elschen and Illana, a new left hand turn lane quietly opened Saturday afternoon in Greenfield.

For weeks since mid July, VDOT and contractors have been working on the intersection where the family was rear ended while waiting to turn left. The impact shoved their car into the opposing lane of traffic hitting a van head on. Both young daughters were killed at the scene, their mother died a short time later on the way to UVa Medical Center in a helicopter.

Cars slowly move through the construction area as it was just starting back in July of 2010.

Though traffic was slowed for many, many weeks as the construction continued, VDOT had completed almost everything by Saturday afternoon, within the estimated completion date of mid September 2010. Other than a few final touches the project is complete.

  1. So what is the big cleared lot next to Ashley’s for?

When I talked to VDOT earlier this summer I thought that was part of the road construction …

  2. Hey Janet, our understanding is that was a staging area to work from during the project, and will eventually be cleaned up and returned to its previous state.
