Dr. Penny Crisp, whose career as a toxicologist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency spanned more than two decades, believes we—and our government—don’t know enough about the chemicals we use.

At the Friday, April 2, meeting of the Nelson County Garden Club, Dr. Crisp will speak from her experience. Her talk is titled “Are We Poisoning Our Children? Facts, Fiction, and a Call to Action.” She will describe how such things as pesticides, cleaning agents, food additives, cosmetics, and dietary supplements are studied and regulated. And, she will describe how adopting Integrated Pest Management techniques—using the safest known effective substances—can make our surroundings safer.

Dr. Crisp is a member of the Virginia Pesticide Control Board. Until her retirement in 2004, she was Executive Director of the Risk Science Institute in Washington, DC, after serving as Senior Science Advisor to the Director in the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs. A member of the Garden Club since 2004, she resides in North Garden.

The meeting is open to the public.
