Wintergreen Mountain
Nelson County, Virginia
Folks living up on the mountains near Wintergreen Resort and the Blue Ridge Parkway awoke this morning to the sound of a helicopter flying around. Our “on the spot” Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura grabbed this shot as the chopper was flying over near The Mountain Inn.

Liz Salas with The Wintergreen Nature Foundation tells us it’s a program to help control the infestation of gypsy moths that have become a real problem here in Central Virginia. “They started around 6am this morning and should be done about noon,” Liz tells us.
Good get Paul, thanks for the picture!
I hope they notified the residents that they should take precautions to protect themselves and their pets while the spraying went on. Can anyone tell me if that was done?
Not sure Ann, but just reading on the Virginia Tech site about this and any of the stuff they use is pretty negligible. Here’s the link to their site, interesting read: http://fubyss.ento.vt.edu/vagm/pesticides.html
I don’t recall seeing anything and there is a lot of email that flies around from the various groups and entities here on the Mountain. I think I would have noticed.
Interesting in NoVA, any scheduled chopper flyovers hit the Arlington and Fairfax email alerts a day or so ahead so people aren’t concerned about choppers hovering in the sky. Everyone up there is still very 9-11 aware.
