Nelson County, Virginia
As of 3 PM EST moderate to sometimes heavy snow started falling in portions of Nelson County, Virginia. Temperatures around 3:45 PM we were just above the freezing mark at 34° in the Rockfish Valley here at our office, Up on the mountain at our station atop The Wintergreen Nature Foundation at 3500 feet, plenty of cold air is available with a late afternoon temp of 26°. Snowfall in the valley is melting on contact since temps are not at freezing just yet, but they will fall to just below freezing in the overnight hours.
Currently a coastal low pressure area will continue working up the eastern seaboard and any change in the track of that low will affect how much snow we will see. Right now the heavier snow amounts look to be east of I-95, but amounts even in the neighborhood of 4-7 inches are very possible in our area. The more significant snowfall will come after dark.
