Nelson County, Virginia – Updated 6:30 AM EST
An approaching winter storm is starting to impact Nelson & much of Central Virginia today thru Wednesday. Winter Storm Watches and advisories were replaced with Winter Storm Warnings by Tuesday morning. While little snow had started just before daylight Tuesday in Nelson, regional radar shows a broad area of wintry weather just to the west working it’s way in the area.

According to closing reports on the NBC-29 website, Nelson County along with many other area schools are closed.

Predictions are for anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow, sleet & freezing rain with this storm when all is said and done. We’ll start out with mainly snow today, but another area of weather moves in late this evening bringing, unfortunately, freezing rain into the mix. As of Tuesday morning predictions of about 1/4″ of ice are forecast on top of what snow falls today.

At 6:15 AM EST, sleet and freezing rain had begun here at the NCL office in the Rockfish Valley, but now snowfall has been noted. Depending on how much warm air aloft stays in place will determine how much and what type of precipitation we get. Regardless of the type of precipitation, there’s plenty of moisture for this system to tap into so it’s pretty certain we will get some form of wintry weather throughout the day into Wednesday.

By Wednesday, temperatures will have warmed enough for the precipitation to tun to just plain rain by the afternoon, but we may start out the day with freezing rain during the early morning hours.

We will be updating the site throughout the day, so check back often for the latest information.

  1. Tommy– at 8:00 AM in “Woods Mill,” the ground was VERY slippery — feels like the sleet is turning to rain.

P.S. I found the posts re Food Lion arrest, etc. Thank you for the great work!

  2. Hi Tommy,

No snow yet up here on Devil’s Knob, but the branches on the hemlock trees outside my window are drooping, and there is ice on the sidewalks.

    Best regards,
    Paul
