Arrington – Nelson County, Virginia
Girl Scouts recently got the chance to see how the process goes here at NCL to put together our monthly magazine. It was part of a Cookie Badge in preparation for selling Girl Scout cookies this season which began on January 9th.
As part of earning the badge, the scouts participated in a workshop on journalism and photography. Before that session, they had a sleepover at Nelson United Methodist Church in Arrington, the girls engaged in role playing to learn how to work with difficult customers. They made posters to advertise their upcoming Cookie Booths they will have in various places throughout the county. “They also learned about conducting surveys and graphing out the popularity of each cookie so they order enough of each type of cookie for the cookie booths,” says scout leader, Betsy Smith of Roseland.
“The main objective is to keep these pre-teen girls interested in scouting so they want to remain a girl scout throughout their middle school and high school years – exposing these girls to positive female role models, giving them exciting opportunities in which to participate and giving them goals that are reachable and obtainable is what makes them tomorrow’s leaders,” Betsy continues.
Think we may have some new NCL photographers on the way!
Thanks for letting us come out and talk!
How fun!!! Did you buy Adam his first box of Thin Mints? :<}
What a wonderful thing for you guys to do for these young ladies. Some of my best memories from my many years in Scouting, both as a boy and as an adult leader, come from the job-shadowing and career exploration which came as a result of earning Merit Badges. More of us should support Scouting in Nelson. I feel I have a responsibility to give back to the many who helped me to my Eagle (1963). Our son, Kevin, feels the same way in his community in Asheville, NC. He is an Eagle, as well (1997). Keep up the great work, and post the location of cookie sales as I really NEED some extra calories this year.
