Major Accident On Top of Afton Mountain I-64 : Scene Cleared : All Lanes Open :UPDATED

Afton Mountain, Virginia
Authorities are working a very serious accident involving a semi and a passenger car on I-64 just west of exit 99 on I-64 in the westbound lane. (That’s the mountain exit to Nelson County, Virginia from I-64)

According to firsthand witness accounts phone into NCL, the car involved in the accident was completely destroyed. “It was just flattened, I have never seen such a serious looking wreck,” says Milly Colella of Nellysford who was on her way back to Nelson and personally saw the wreck scene just moments after it happened.

As you can see from the Trafficland image above, traffic is moving, but at a slowed pace while the wreck scene is being cleared. The fog on Afton Mountain this morning had visibilities at near zero for several hours and is almost certainly a contributing factor to the wreck.
