Tuesday was pretty much a cloudy and rainy day off and on. We ended the day with lots of low clouds like those over the mountains to the west of Greenfield in the photo above. The evening also presented the first tornado watch of the season for Nelson and most Central Virginia area. Thankfully no tornado warnings were issued in the immediate area, but several went out to our south toward Roanoke, Danville, and Martinsville. Just before 10 PM last night several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued, including Nelson, but really the only effect was heavy rainfall for about 30 minutes. Some stations picking up an inch in that time span alone. The Tornado Watch was scaled back and canceled for Nelson County and points west by 11Pm as more stable air began building in.
As I’ve talked about, March is the beginning of the change weatherwise for most parts of the east and southeast U.S. with the exception of the far NE. Though we still have plenty of cold weather left, we’ll see more of these wild swings as we end winter and head into spring. Temps on Tuesday weren’t as warm as the day before due to cloud cover, but felt very mild because the humidity was way up with all of the moisture streaming in. Almost all locations in the Rockfish Valley and points S & W got better than an inch of rain, while less was in the eastern portions.
By Wednesday, look for skies to clear by noon with some breezy winds from time to time. It won’t be quite as warm as yesterday, but still not bad for early March. Temps will be around the 60° for afternoon highs in the valley and low to mid 50’s mountains. Those winds will make it feel cool sometimes gusting as much as 30 MPH from the west in the morning, especially on the mountains. They settle down more in the afternoon.
By Friday night we might see a chance for a rain snow mix . Temperatures take a brief dive late in the weekend with overnight lows back in the teens on the mountains, and low to mid 20’s valley. Temps moderate around the first of next week.

The remainder of the week: On Friday look for showers developing by noon both mountains and valley. Highs will be upper 30’s mountains and upper 40’s valley.Friday night that rain could mix with snow in particular above 2000 feet. On Saturday lingering showers or snow showers are possible in the morning but sunshine should appear by afternoon. Highs generally mid 40’s valley and low 30’s mountains.
Sunday looks mostly sunny with valley highs near 50° and mountains mid to upper 30’s. Overnight lows colder with teens mountains and mid 20’s valley. We warm back up a bit by Tuesday of next week.

Here’s how Jace describes the makeup of The Red Drum Ramblers in his own humorous words!
Hi Tommy,
Wow! That fiddle will blast open your eyelids faster than yesterday’s coffee re-heated over an open flame, eh?!
I caught the initial Red Drum Ramblers offering this morning, and wanted to contact and update you Here’s the scoop: The Red Drum Ramblers are Jace Goodling (fiddle and vocals) and Tim Scruby (pronounced just like it’s spelled, kind of rhyming with Scooby, as in …Doo, but with an “R” thrown in) clawhammer banjo. That’s our “normal” line-up. We are both actually certifiable “Natives” to the area. Tim grew up in Waynesboro and lives just over the county line (on the Albemarle side) in Afton. I grew up in an apple orchard just on the other side of Batesville and have lived the last twenty one years in Afton. (You know the story: grew up, went to college, learned “go west, young man”, and made it seven miles to Afton….been here ever since)
For this recording, we were fortunate enough to have our good friend and excellent musician, Jesse Fiske, accompanying us on guitar and harmonica. Jesse is one of the original members of the band, “The Hackensaw Boys” from Charlottesville, currently touring all around the western part of the United States. Jesse did the recording for us at his house (thus the note, “Jess and Jen’s” on the CD,,,, his girlfriend, Jen Fleish, plays acoustic dog house bass for “Jim Waive and The Young Divorcees”). We’ve actually never recorded an official CD, as in a commercial venture worthy of commerce and trade, so you have the “original”…..and as I mentioned, they’re all “one takes”: something that Monkeyclaus folks probably shudder to think about. HA! But even if there is some demented soul out there that would want to hear more of our music, he’d have to come see us “Live”. In addition to the Nelson Farmers’ Market, we perform at Stone Soup Cafe, a neat little book store/ cafe’ on Main street in Waynesboro. We’re also available for house parties and barn dances. We play “old time” music, NOT blue grass, and we like to stay fairly loyal to the old time mountain music songs as we learned them: ragged but right.
