Weathercast by Tommy Stafford, Nelson County Life Magazine

A major change starting with this weekend’s audio version of the weathercast. We’ve been working to get this approved and got the green light this past week from our first musical artist, Jan Smith. We love her music and she’s absolutely fabulous! If you listen to the webcast version each day, you know I generally end it and go out with some kind of generic music bed. Then I got to thinking why not use music of our local artists from right here in and Nelson County, Virginia. I spoke to Jan about it and she’s the first we’ll be highlighting over the next week. Then on to others. We’ll highlight a track from one of their CD’s daily as we head out of the weathercast. We’re excited and proud to start doing this. Our area has some of the best musicians in the world and now folks anywhere in the world can take a listen. Yep, that goes for New Zealand. We have one listener there every morning! You can read more about what cut we’re playing at the bottom of the text portion of this weather.

Finally! We can say so long, at least for a bit, to the extreme cold temperatures we’ve been experiencing for the first few days of January. This weekend milder temperatures began working into the area as an arctic high pressure lost it’s grip as we get milder temps blowing in on southerly winds. The first part of the coming week, we’re talking mid 60’s to near 70° for afternoon high temps.

We had very light showers overnight Saturday across much of the area, but no one station received any substantial rainfall. Look for variably cloudy skies today across Nelson and Central Virginia, but we will see breaks in the clouds with sun peeking through from time to time. By Monday partly sunny skies work with very mild temperatures reaching near 70° degrees.

Today’s cut is James River from the CD 29 Dances.

Louisville, Kentucky native Jan Smith writes songs rooted in vibrant imagery and sincere, stark emotion. The artists whose music she grew up with — Merle Haggard, Nina Simone, and Townes Van Zant among many others – influence her work, as does the traditional bluegrass music of her new home in the mountains of central Virginia.

On April 4, 2006, Landslide Records released “29 Dances,” produced in Nashville by Bil VornDick (Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley). The record features Johnny Hiland, Byron House (Sam Bush, Nickel Creek), Pat McInerney (Nanci Griffith), Randy Kohrs, David Talbot (the Grascals), Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs), Robert Bowlin (Bill Monroe), Patty Mitchell, and Smith’s partner, Jeff Vogelgesang.
